About this deal

Like its predecessors before it, the LG G3 OLED is the smart buy for cinephiles who want market-leading picture quality. The G3’s OLED panel uses the latest brightness-boosting technology for startlingly bright highlights and vivid color output, and it's tailor-made for a flush, wall-mounted position. Dolby Vision implementation among various TV manufacturers can be all over the place, but based on our extensive testing, LG’s is probably the best, although shadow detail in very dark scenes was slightly crushed on our review sample in the most accurate Dolby Vision Cinema mode. LG G3 OLED review: Gaming The built-in sound quality of the LG G3 is surprisingly good for a TV. While (of course) connecting one of the best soundbars would be even more immersive, I found that turning on the AI Sound Pro enhanced the audio quality significantly. The slightly noisy look that we'd sometimes notice in dark scenes on LG OLEDs has largely gone on the G3 too, while at the other end of the spectrum, LG takes full advantage of its new TV's extra brightness threshold by delivering much more brightness and intensity in peak light areas without 'clipping' subtle shading details. The G3 uses a new sixth-gen Alpha a9 AI processor, which should run largely the same as previous models, with a few upgrades to LG’s AI Picture Pro and AI Sound Pro modes, which tweak audio-visual output depending on the content you’re watching. The former offers “improved upscaling” and object detection, while the latter imitates a “virtual 9.1.2 surround sound” on the TV’s 3.1.2 channel speakers.

In terms of native 10-bit gradation, there was some posterisation in the skies of The Martian, but I was able to suppress it effectively by using the Smooth Gradation de-contouring filter. I wouldn’t advise going higher than the least aggressive setting of “Low”, however, as the “Medium” and “High” scrubbed away some fine detail. LG G3 OLED review: HDR performance There are four HDMI 2.1 inputs, along with a headphone out, digital optical out, Ethernet, satellite, two RF aerial inputs, three USBs, and a CI+ 1.4 (Common Interface) slot. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Bluetooth Surround Ready, and WiSA support (up to 2.1 channels). And I have to say, when I first saw the high-resolution image with the pixel-perfect colors and contrast, it was like what I imagine putting glasses on for the first time would have been like. Every dot looked to be honed to the smallest degree, with punchy colors and dramatic depths.

Colours also appeared more vibrant when watching WCG (wide colour gamut) content thanks to a combination of the higher brightness and LG’s processing, although QD-OLED TVs still have the upper hand in outright colour luminance due to their RGB subpixel make-up as opposed to WRGB, which results in some colour dilution. This streamlined feature allows for easy adjustments of volume, brightness, picture mode and other common settings, making it more convenient to fine-tune your viewing experience. An external soundbar – perhaps one of the latest LG models to take advantage of the G3’s new WOW Orchestra feature – or home theatre system is recommended to complement the TV’s outstanding picture quality. WOW Orchestra combines the TV speaker sound with a compatible LG soundbar to generate a synchronised output that’s more powerful and immersive yet harmoniously balanced.

Cinematic Movement is the least aggressive, stabilising 24fps content but not necessarily removing its natural stutter. Natural isn’t as the name implies, with more jittery movement watching 1917 and it also has the effect of making the lower half of the soldiers’ bodies look a little fake. Soap Opera Effect (SOE) settles in with this setting. It's important to stress that G3's huge picture improvements pay off with game graphics at least as impactfully as they do with video. Gaming fans already loving the prowess of LG TVs as gaming displays will likely think they've died and gone to heaven when they see what their games look like on the G3. OLED image retention can be managed with the Screensaver mode (leaves no static images on the screen), Screen Move (which shifts pixels slightly), and Logo Brightness (which reduces how bright static logos on a screen are). Turn the TV on for the first time and it’ll boot in Auto Power mode to conserve energy. This can be changed at any time. Picture Quality Motion judder with 24p film sources can sometimes look a touch hard-edged on the OLED65G3 without using any of the provided motion processing options - a result of the extra brightness making juddering edges look more pronounced. LG's Cinematic Movement processing option, though, now delivers an excellent way of reducing 24p judder without making the picture look forced or uncinematic.Although its higher peak brightness has rightly hogged the limelight, the increased light scattering from MLA brings another key benefit, virtually eradicating the off-axis pink tint and luminance drop normally seen on WRGB OLED panels, resulting in some of the widest viewing angles seen on a consumer OLED TV. This TV was made to be wall-mounted, to start; while LG has ditched the ‘Gallery Series’ naming convention from last year’s model, this is still a screen designed to be displayed proudly, like a painting in the Louvre.
