About this deal

While it’s not impossible to get a good result without one, you’re going to appreciate the extra power if you need to crank up the volume at any point. But if anyone tells you that the Sundara simply demands amplification, especially costing thousands of dollars, run fast and never look back. There are some other characteristics of the Sundara that are perhaps less forgivable, but I’ll get back into those in my conclusion.

An electrical field is induced on both sides of the magnets to vibrate the intermediate diaphragm through an oscillating pushing and pulling of the material. These include lighter diaphragms for a faster response and a linear spread of sound across the speaker, reducing the level of distortion. The Sundara Closed Back does improve with time and it seems that pattern will continue for a while to come. The HiFiMan Sundara is for anyone who wants a pair of open-backed headphones that performs great out of the box without much tinkering.

Speaking of the pads, HiFiMan updated the Sundara’s ear pads sometime in 2020 to not only angle where they meet your head (making it fit better), but the cloth material also means you can listen without issue with glasses on. The Sundara Closed Back treble response is all there and what I noticed right away is the ability to quell a bright recording without blurring or veiling any of the high-frequency characteristics. As the cable issue is by far the most common complaint levied against the HiFiMan Sundara, please take a deep breath if you do run into this, as nine times out of ten it’s an easy fix. For those coming fresh to a Hifiman Focus A pad, these are hybrid faux leather and stitched fabric innards with ample openings to go over the ears.

The literature included in the Sundara’s packaging advertises the Sundara as an “easy-to-drive” headphone, and this is partially true. As a verification, I asked my son to come over and without looking at the measurements and EQ, listen to the headphone plain and then with EQ I had built above. Personally, I find the Beyerdynamics to be more comfortable over the long haul, and have a more durable design. That was still relatively early in my audiophile journey, and I’ve since gotten a bit harder to impress, a bit less susceptible to “audiophile magic.

It’s a high class appearance and definitely helped to heighten my sense of glee and restlessness; I wanted to listen to them as soon as possible. With the Sundara the music was enjoyable, having good channel separation and clearly focused central information. It is on the shorter side however, about the length of a regular IEM cable so you will have to get an aftermarket one if you’re looking for something longer.Company registration number: 01402643) only offers products from Creation Consumer Finance, Klarna and Paypal Credit.
