A great pressing, although surface noise is a bit frequent (I can only assume this is due to the lo-fi production of the album), although spindle holes are a bit too small, the color of the record isn't too appealing (but for anyone who prefers any color over an average black it's totally fine), and I feel like the packaging could be a bit better. In many ways, this new 2LP edition of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” is idyllic, because it gives you the essence of all the outtakes in a very easy-to-assimilate, single-disc listening experience. A perfect blend of classical, Christmas, and Jazz this is definitely something you need to give an Xmas Day spin. Christmas Is Coming propels itself along, accurately drawing a picture of anticipation; Skating is straightforwardly sublime, its melody descending in flurries.

Shroeder's affinity for Beethoven gives the album a natural gravitation towards classical and there is a version of Für Elise on Side B. Effectively its theme song, Christmas Time Is Here rests on moody minor chords, undercutting the hopeful lyrical message that’s sung by a slightly off-key children’s choir.

This new edition of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” takes the listener just that extra bit closer to being there in the studio with the musicians who recorded it. Like Jenney, Guaraldi died young, and, like Jenney, he played with a succession of names more likely to crop up in jazz history books and documentaries than his own: in Guaraldi’s case, Stan Getz, Ben Webster and Woody Herman.
