a b Berardinelli, James. "Memento". ReelViews.net. Archived from the original on November 14, 2019 . Retrieved December 16, 2006. When I saw the movie Memento ages ago, I had no idea it was based on a short story. Equally, after finding out that the source material for the movie was a short story, I had also no idea the author and the movie's director were brothers. Both is quite interesting for a number of reasons. The most obvious places to look for memento mori meditations are in funeral art and architecture. Perhaps the most striking to contemporary minds is the transi or cadaver tomb, a tomb that depicts the decayed corpse of the deceased. This became a fashion in the tombs of the wealthy in the fifteenth century, and surviving examples still offer a stark reminder of the vanity of earthly riches. Later, Puritan tomb stones in the colonial United States frequently depicted winged skulls, skeletons, or angels snuffing out candles. These are among the numerous themes associated with skull imagery.

The novel concludes with the deaths of almost all the major characters, as well as a description of the twilight years of surviving individuals. The Stoics of classical antiquity were particularly prominent in their use of this discipline, and Seneca's letters are full of injunctions to meditate on death. [7] The Stoic Epictetus told his students that when kissing their child, brother, or friend, they should remind themselves that they are mortal, curbing their pleasure, as do "those who stand behind men in their triumphs and remind them that they are mortal". [8] The Stoic Marcus Aurelius invited the reader (himself) to "consider how ephemeral and mean all mortal things are" in his Meditations. [9] [10] Let death and exile, and all other things which appear terrible, be daily before your eyes. But chiefly death, and you will never entertain any abject thought, nor too eagerly covet anything.”– Epictetus Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife. [15] Architecture [ edit ] Unshrouded skeleton on Diana Warburton's tomb (dated 1693) in St John the Baptist Church, Chester Many medical experts have cited Memento as featuring one of the most realistic and accurate depictions of anterograde amnesia. Caltech neuroscientist Christof Koch called Memento "the most accurate portrayal of the different memory systems in the popular media", [68] while physician Esther M. Sternberg, Director of the Integrative Neural Immune Program at the National Institute of Mental Health, identified the film as "close to a perfect exploration of the neurobiology of memory." [69]Memento Mori is the free short story that inspired Nolan's brother, Christopher Nolan ( Inception, Interstellar) to make mind-bending film Memento starring Guy Pearce. Don’t behave as if you are destined to live forever. What’s fated hangs over you. As long as you live and while you can, become good Now.”– Marcus Aurelius

The Way of the Samurai is, morning after morning, the practice of death, considering whether it will be here or be there, imagining the most sightly way of dying, and putting one's mind firmly in death. Although this may be a most difficult thing, if one will do it, it can be done. There is nothing that one should suppose cannot be done. [26]
