About this deal

An intriguing read that drew me in from the very beginning. It combines heartfelt family drama with a gripping plot. The characters are expertly drawn … Susan has done a brilliant job of weaving her research seamlessly into the novel” - Julie Corbin

The characters of the 'real' story are unlikeable, privileged, and ruthless and, as such did not make me feel anything toward them. The characters in the manuscript, which is meant to reflect exactly what happened, are totally unlikeable too. I never really felt sorry for Marina reading the 'truth', the sex scenes, or the faintly veiled threats, so not only was it confusing at times to remember who was who, manuscript character or 'real' character, I also didn't experience any great sense of tension or worry that I think the author intended readers to feel as Marina becomes more and more paranoid. Marina’s anxiety infects you as you read, and I found myself suspecting pretty much everyone she knew of either being the mystery author or being in cahoots with them! The characters were unlikeable, over privileged and cold. I couldn't relate to any of them and that's a massive negative for me.Lewis was born in the United Kingdom on January 1, 1956 in Bristol. Her father was Welsh and was employed as a miner. In addition, he was an engineer, a poet, and thinker. When her mother was twenty years old, she got her father to buy a ring in place of a motorcycle and they were all a normal happy family from then on out. One of the disclosures didn’t endear me to 2 of the characters, and didn’t seem to fit the rest of the their character traits, although with wealth it seems extreme behaviours are more commonplace. At times there were parts which felt overly dramatised but I’m not sure if that’s the writing or the narrators interpretation. My first book by this author. I had the audiobook read by Helen Stern, a great range of distinct voices for the array of characters.

Marina is an executive publishing director at Hawksley Maine. When a leading literacy agent brings her a new manuscript, by an anonymous author, why does the story feel familiar? Does the past ever stay in the past or does that feeling always follow you?Marina Forster is currently the Head of Fiction at a London publishing house which is now under the management of her wealthy American husband, Maxim Forster. She’s the mother of twin teenage girls, and as well as a house in Holland Park, they own a beautiful estate in the Cotswolds. This novel marks Susan Lewis’ 50th novel, which is quite an achievement. As this was my first experience of her writing, I am unable to judge whether it is typical of her style. She got herself a Mercedes to share with her dogs as well as a house that sat up in the hills with perfect views of the sunset each night an a pool to swim in. She decided to try and navigate her way through Hollywood, but ultimately realized that Tinsel Town was not going to be waiting for her to show up. From then on she just had more fun, going on dates and attending glam parties and movie screenings. What a complex family dynamic and so much going on with the plot. It made for a full on pacy read. There are a lot of characters, flaws, secrets, twists and a lot thrown into the mix ( almost kitchen sink level)

These characters were brilliant. Both women have flaws and you are never quite sure which one to believe. Mariana was betrayed by her ex-husband which left her vulnerable and unable to trust anyone, While you see her vulnerability and hurt you also see her cut-throat determination to succeed. She had no problem stealing her best friend’s boyfriend. Mariana is not nearly as innocent as she appears to be. As for Shana, while she should be the bad guy in the story I found myself wondering if she is that bad. These women will keep you on your toes while trying to decide who is being honest. I loved that the plot was within a publishing/literacy agent setting and it is UK based with mentions of The Cotswolds and Dorset.A police investigation may end up turning up a ton of secrets. As the community has plenty to hide, not everyone is going to be thrilled at all of the secrets making it out to the light of day. It may very well be that everyone is guilty of something– they’re all acting like they have things to hide. Susan Lewis has a gift for telling warm family stories that also take you by surprise’ Jane Corry‘A gripping read’ Bella - There were times when I thought it was an interesting idea, a story within a story, and moments when I was interested enough to wonder what was going to happen next. Was Marina guilty of murder? Did Maxim, her husband, arrange to have incriminating evidence left at Shana Morales flat so that his wife didn't stay in jail or go to trial as the defendant?
