About this deal

Introduced to the hobby of baking at a tender age of 9 years, Brain Hart Hoffman is now the Editor-in-Chief of the popular magazine Bake from Scratch. America’s Test Kitchen Aborted Arc: Throughout the first half of the novel, there’s a subplot involving Gerry possibly losing a lot of money or even having to go to prison due to bribery. However, by the second half, it’s barely even mentioned. This is possibly justified in that Beauty (who’s the narrator) and Dilly have left Gerry by this point and neither of them particularly cares where he ends up due to his horrible treatment of them. Known for her restaurant, HotChocolate, Mindy Segal is the author of the best-selling cookbook ‘Cookie Love.’ In addition, she is one of the premier pastry chefs who has appeared on many esteemed TV shows. Gourmet Magazine Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Rhona, to a certain extent. When Beauty casually mentions that she would love to have a pet rabbit Rhona gets her one for her birthday, thinking it would be a perfect gift. She's right, but she has no idea that Gerry has forbidden Beauty from having pets and is secretly furious. After all the guests leave, Gerry lets the rabbit out of its hutch and it is killed, which finally results in Dilly breaking up with him and leaving with Beauty. Beauty doesn't blame Rhona and even avoids telling her the details so as not to upset her, knowing she was just trying to be a good friend.

Her economics degree from Cambridge facilitates her keen interest in current affairs, and other interviewees range from Tony Blair to Prince William. Konnie has presented a number of podcasts, including the Penguin Podcast for Penguin Books, Switch Off for BBC Sounds and Thinking Out Loud for Acast. Anyway. I couldn't put it down! I read as I was cooking, and my daughter ended up going to bed an hour late because I just had to finish the book! What a great story - I mean, I knew it all already - the horrible bullying schoolmates, not a happy home, but then escape and new friends and everything ends well. And yet... and yet... it's the characters that make the story, isn't it? Beauty with her gentle nature, and her mother - essentially that stupid "babe" that people laugh at usually - but a wonderful warm mother, her father, another deliciously evil villain character complicated by the fact that he is her father, and he does love her, albeit in his twisted way. And the others - snotty rich kids, Mike the painter and the kids in the new school. And Sam and Lily. Well Done, Son" Guy: Beauty spends much of the first half of the novel trying to please Gerry (though some of it's motivated from fear). She eventually stops caring what her dad thinks. Beauty harus menanggung ejekan dari teman-teman nya disekolah karena namanya...bahkan mereka memanggilnya Ugly yang menurut mereka lebih pantas untuknya. Dengan pipi gembil, rambut lurus dan sikap tidak percaya diri, makin menambah penderitaan Beauty.Big Fancy House: The Cooksons' house. They live in a custom-built, six-bedroom house, with three bathrooms and a hot-tub. Beauty even has her own en-suite with taps shaped like dolphins. Gerry, of course, constantly shows it off to everyone who sets foot in it. Totally funny and charming and relatable. The book that is. Not the boy, he's really annoying.' - David Baddiel Gerry Cookson: Beauty's completely evil, vile, abusive and controlling father who has no good in him and emotionally abuses his wife and daughter. I have never read any Jacqueline Wilson books before, I knew (I thought I knew) what kind of books she writes, you know, Tracy Beaker is on all the time on CBBC etc. I didn't think badly of her books, but I wasn't really interested in them, I thought I'd read it all before.

Control Freak: Gerry. On the lower end of the scale, the family are never allowed to wear shoes in the house in case they scratch the floor (which is somewhat reasonable)...on the other end, he tries to control what Beauty and Dilly wear, what they can say to him and even what hobbies they can do. Entertainment Below Their Age: Although she is very intelligent, Beauty's favourite TV show is Sam and Lily in the Rabbit Hutch, which is for very young children. Her mother Dilly also likes it. Sweet Baker: Dilly is a kindhearted and optimistic cookie-baker, who is particularly devoted to ensuring her daughter is safe and happy. It’s the start of a new school year at Honeycutt Elementary and that means one thing: student council elections!

And then there's the "Brownies & Blondies" - where you an make the classic fudgy brownies and also branch out to turtle, marshmallow peanut butter and expresso carmel. Cookie gets the chance to go on her favourite TV show, Brainbusters. It's only a chance though - she'll have to win the school science competition first. It shouldn't be too hard . . . all she has to do is keep her head down, and not get too over-excited. Unfortunately that's not Cookie's strong point ... This book is for… both those who seek the easy but enchanting and those in the mood for some extravaganza.

It’s implied that Dilly’s mother wasn’t particularly nice to her either; Dilly moved out at sixteen because her mother got a boyfriend Dilly disliked and she's made little effort to maintain a relationship with Dilly over the years. Since I already knew what the story was about, I skipped the “General Sketches” she mentions, and went straight to figuring out the plot structure and character arc, as well as interviewing my characters. Her series finishes with writing out the structure for each scene, but I did this as I wrote the first draft. I wanted to finish my third draft in time for Pitch Wars, but in September, I connected with a mentor through the Women’s Fiction Writing Association (WFWA). My mentor read my query, synopsis, and first three chapters. She commented how it sounded like a Romance, which had been one of my biggest fears. Not that I have anything against the Romance genre, but though my story is romantic, the plot and structure don’t match with genre expectations. She advised I add more to my synopsis and query regarding a subplot about a looming food inspection.

Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Gerry is not an especially attractive man, described as squat, balding and pudgy. Dilly is much younger than him and is described as very beautiful; Gerry also tends to get her to wear revealing clothes and flashy jewellery to emphasize this more. Dilly even thinks that the main reason Gerry asked her out for drinks rather than firing her was because she was wearing a low-cut top when she had to report to him. I let the novel rest and then read it again on my Kindle. The novel flowed much better, and there were only a few scenes that needed fixing. Sentimental Homemade Toy: Beauty's favorite toy is a ragdoll handmade by her mother, which she calls PJ, short for Plain Jane. She looks a little lopsided, but Beauty loves her anyway and finds her comforting.Important Haircut: Towards the end of the novel, Beauty gets her long hair cut short. Previously, she’d never been allowed to cut her hair, so it’s a sign of her breaking free from Gerry's control and becoming more of her own person. Everyone agrees that it suits her much better and she gains a much needed confidence boost. Rhona Marshall: The only classmate who is nice to Beauty but is unable to be her best friend as she already best friends with Skye though she wishes otherwise.
