The feeding value of straw can be improved by grinding or by treatment with alkalis such as NaOH and ammonia. Physical treatment However, though urea treatment was "hugely extolled" asthe most promising treatment for small-scale farms in tropical areas ( Chander, 2010b), a 2010 report by the FAO showed that this technology could be considered a failure due to its poor adoption by farmers, except in China. Many reasons have been suggested among which the cost of urea, the time (and subsequent labour costs) needed and the insufficient water supply were the most important. Reducing labour requirements through the mechanical spraying of straw during harvest, or through the establishment of straw treatment cooperatives, might improve its adoption by a wider range of small farmers. The use of urine as cheap urea source was also proposed as a possible incentive factor for farmers ( Owen et al., 2010). Other chemical treatments Ishii, Takayoshi (2017). Supplying pregnant sows with straw was found to be effective in preventing bar and chain manipulations and in reducing stereotypic behaviour ( Stewart et al., 2011; Veum et al., 2009; Whittaker et al., 1998; Spoolder et al., 1995). The unsized oat groats pass through a heat and moisture treatment to balance moisture for optimal storage conditions and to deactivate self catalysing enzyme activity. Oat groats are high in fat (lipids) and once removed from their protective hulls and exposed to air, enzymatic ( lipase) activity begins to break down the fat into free fatty acids, ultimately causing an off-flavour or rancidity. Depending on temperature, humidity and moisture content, de-hulled oats can begin to show signs of enzymatic rancidity rapidly if not stabilized. This process is primarily done in food-grade plants, not in feed-grade plants. Groats are not considered raw if they have gone through this process; the heat disrupts the germ and they cannot sprout. In some countries, cereals are treated on the field with weedkillers such as glyphosate. Fortunately, the usein rabbit feeding (growth and reproduction) of grain + straw produced in these conditions did not impair the performance of rabbits( Fris Jensen, 1988). Add approximately two cups of oatstraw infusion to warm bathwater to relieve dry and itchy skin. Alternatively, combine 1/2-1 cup milky or regular oats in a muslin bag or used nylon.Perhaps the most significant benefit of the oat is its ability to fight cancer. Although further research is needed to determine the full extent of its cancer-fighting potency, early studies are encouraging. Domestic production of fresh fruit as a percentage of total new supply increased from 15% to 17% in 2022. Data Sources and Revisions Chang HC, Huang CN, Yeh DM, et al. Some of the more detailed commentary in this chapter is based on data in that report that is not presented here. In addition to its recognition and value as a stable food crop, however, oat straw is also used in the treatment of a number of human maladies, ailments or discomforts.Straw is often a synonym for the haulms and vines of legume crops ( pea, common bean, lentil, cowpea...), oil crops (rape, groundnut, soybean...), root crops (potatoes) or textile crops ( flax). Legume straws are much more difficult to recover: in humid climates the leaves tend to discolour or drop at, or before, harvest, and in dry conditions they shatter. Where the final drying of the crop takes place at the homestead, it is easier to recover the leaves and stems. Yields range from 60to 80 US bushels per acre (5.2–7.0m 3/ha) on marginal land, to 100to 150 US bushels per acre (8.7–13.1m 3/ha) on high-producing land. The average production is 100 US bushels per acre (8.7m 3/ha), or 3.5 metric tons per hectare (1.4long ton/acre; 1.6short ton/acre). Straw yields are variable, ranging from 1–3 metric tons per hectare (0.40–1.19long ton/acre; 0.45–1.34short ton/acre), mainly due to available nutrients and the variety used (some are short-strawed, meant specifically for straight combining). In lactating sows, untreated ground straw had a reducing effect on milk production as excessive straw consumption reduced energy intake ( Kempen et al., 1977). This dilution of dietary energy was found to be useful in pregnant sows, as it prevents them being overweight at farrowing, which can be deleterious to piglet survival ( Dourmad et al., 1994). Including straw in the diet resulted in higher or unchanged sow performance, litter size and litter weight at birth and weaning ( Veum et al., 2009; Guillemet et al., 2007; Gärsch et al., 1989). The effects of a high fibre diet on duration of parturition are debated. This duration was reducedin sows fed a 7% straw diet ( Morgenthum et al., 1988). In Canada, No.1 oats weigh 42.64lb/USbu (549kg/m 3); No.2 oats must weigh 40.18lb/USbu (517kg/m 3); No.3 oats must weigh at least 38.54lb/USbu (496kg/m 3) and if oats are lighter than 36.08lb/USbu (464kg/m 3) they do not make No.4 oats and have no grade. Grinding improves the ingestibility of straws, but not its energy or nitrogen value.Grinding also deprives the animal of the opportunity to reject the fibrous parts, thus reducing the digestibility of the feed, although this disadvantage is usually counterbalanced by the higher voluntary feed intake. For example, grinding wheat straw, even rather coarsely, can result in a 20-30% increase in intake because of the faster rate of passage through the rumen ( Göhl, 1982). The following table shows the effect of combining grinding and NaOH treatment on barley straw fed to sheep ( Fernandez-Carmona et al., 1972): Chopped straw Surprisingly, in addition to its calming effect on the nervous system, oatstraw has increased both male and female Libido. However, there is evidence that oat straw, also known as Avena sativa, can benefit mental health. Oat straw extract has many mental health benefits, including its capacity to cure depression and anxiety. Oat straw has been used to treat mood problems for years, while additional research is required to determine its full potential as a natural treatment for such conditions. Use of pure oats in a gluten-free diet offers improved nutritional value from the rich content of oat protein, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and lipids, [4] [27] but remains controversial because a small proportion of people with celiac disease react to pure oats. [3] [28] Some cultivars of pure oat could be a safe part of a gluten-free diet, requiring knowledge of the oat variety used in food products for a gluten-free diet. [3] [4] Determining whether oat consumption is safe is critical because people with poorly controlled celiac disease may develop multiple severe health complications, including cancers.
