Browning is set by a sliding control that runs from 1 to 6, but you can position it anywhere on that sliding scale. This controls both slots at once. The Sage lifts the toast automatically and beeps when it’s done. And how beautifully done it was! The browning was perfect, even at the top of the slice, which we thought may be underdone. Only the Morphy Richards and the Dualit Brushed Architect Four-Slice Toaster offers comparable browning. The Sage has a boxy design in brushed stainless steel. The lines are clean and a bit industrial. It looks like it means business. If you want even toasting and great features, but aren’t bothered about the motorised lift function, then opt for the Dualit Brushed Architect Four-Slice Toaster – four slots for less money. If you love the idea of the motorised lift then consider the even pricier Morphy Richards Redefine Glass Toaster. And if you just want a good toaster then the Hotpoint TT44EAX0 is very impressive. Verdict Perhaps the more exciting features (and what you’re paying for) are the five auto features designed to make toasting a breeze. The buttons are self-explanatory, so you won’t have to decipher complicated symbols.Slots are an impressive 4cm wide, narrowing to less than 2cm to grip toast. The Crumpet/Fruit Loaf button seems to be equivalent to everyone else’s bagel button. Has Sage done focus groups and decided that crumpets and fruit loaf are more popular? It heats just the middle elements. For those who are fussy about their toasting results, you’ll definitely love the Sage Smart Toast. Firstly, and most importantly, it makes perfect, evenly-toasted bread every time. Result! The Sage looks fantastic, but initially I wasn’t particularly impressed when slotting in the bread. The two slots aren’t quite long enough to hold a large slice of bread horizontally. This meant that it had to be placed in the toaster vertically. Would the top of the slice go unbrowned? The beep at the end of the toasting cycle is handy but it happens at the exact same time as the toast popping up, so the sound is masked. It would be better if it beeped a second earlier or later. Maybe. The Sage is impressive – both in terms of gadgety features and even browning – but it’s pricey for a two-slot toaster, especially since those slots aren’t particularly generous in size.

But there are other toasters like the Dualit 4 Slot Lite and Hotpoint TT 44E UP0 with built-in intelligence that perform even better by reducing toasting time if the toaster is already hot.
