The book begins by showing you what an ass Anthony Loyd is - he presents himself quite honestly as a war tourist - flying out to Sarajevo to see some action!From the ruined airport complex a Ukrainian APC took me to the PTT building, the city’s central communications centre and at the time a main UN base. A small part of it is about his experiences in Chechnya, a portion that could have been left out except that it fits in the chronology of his account of his life, an account which is punctuated with information about his family, their military background, his participation in the Gulf War and his heroin addiction. More terrifying is the fact that these atrocities happened not in some distant-past World War II concentration camp or medieval torture dungeon, but around the same time as I was watching Ninja Turtles. He believed that the consequent withdrawal of UN troops would lead to an immediate Serb retaliation that would swiftly overrun Sarajevo’s fragile defence lines. The main room, in which we spent most of our time, moved in an L shape through an incongruous circular arch of Sixties-style architecture.
