Success!

Just like Pandora Hearts, I originally discovered Soul Eater by the anime adaptation. And just like Pandora Hearts, I loved the Soul Eater anime except for the ending. I then tried to seek out the manga, but at the time, I didn’t have money to spend on an ongoing manga. That, and there wasn’t many volumes in English out at the time when I finished the anime. It wasn’t until early this year when I finally decided to collect the series, this time via Square Enix Manga’s hardcover rerelease. So how is the Soul Eater manga? Kenny, Penny (October 27, 2009). "Soul Eater v1". Manga Life. Archived from the original on October 31, 2009 . Retrieved June 23, 2020. The Soul Eater manga had 19.6 million copies in circulation as of July 2019. Both the manga and anime series have been overall well received, especially for its art style and Gothic setting, often compared by critics to Tim Burton's works like The Nightmare Before Christmas. The series, however, has been criticized for its use of fanservice and similarity to other shōnen series. Interview with Atsushi Ohkubo" (in French). Manga News. March 20, 2009. Archived from the original on November 7, 2015 . Retrieved May 7, 2017. The first half of this volume introduces our main characters. Soul Eater has a pretty big cast of main characters, so thankfully, Atsushi Ohkubo didn’t introduce them all at once. There isn’t much of a story so far, but the characters are really fun to read, so I didn’t mind. The art style is somewhat different from the anime’s art style, but it isn’t too drastic, as I could still tell who all of the characters were. There is also slightly more fanservice than in the anime as well, so keep that in mind. It isn’t too bad, but it can be distracting at times. Maka’s extraordinary powers of Soul Perception pinpoint the Kishin’s hideout for DWMA, but getting there is an entirely different kettle of fish. Now it’s up to Kid and the remaining Deathscythes to take out public enemy number one: the Kishin himself!Soon the group are hot on the trail of the madness and mayhem Crona has been leaving in their wake, but when the two parties eventually meet, will there be anything left of the friend Maka cherishes?
