About this deal

I don’t really penalize the Celestron Powerseeker 70AZ for doing what everyone else does, particularly since the quality of the scope is high enough for the price that I could simply throw away the 4mm eyepiece and barlow. Upgrading the Celestron PowerSeeker 70AZ is probably not worth the expense and hassle. You’d be better off saving your money for a different, and preferably larger/better, telescope. What can you see with the Celestron PowerSeeker 70AZ? If you’re hoping to see anything past our solar system in any kind of detail, that’s where these telescopes won’t really be able to help much. Alongside the focal length, the range of magnification is equally important, as this will play into the limitations of what you’re able to see in outer space. Reasonably small and affordable telescopes like the AstroMaster 70AZ are often presumed to be aimed at beginners and young users. However, despite being a typical design and build aimed at beginners we’re not convinced that the AstroMaster 70AZ is going to hold the attention of new users for long. If the Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ telescope isn’t for you

Whether you’re trying to see groups of celestial objects or specific details, you’ll want to always review the focal length of a telescope before you buy it. Magnification Overall, this refractor telescope is an excellent value for beginner astronomers interested in observing planets and the moon. While it may not have a particularly high aperture or magnification capabilities compared to other telescopes on the market, its natural-looking views make it a great choice for those just starting out in astronomy. It is easy to assemble, and you can start using it almost right out of the box. You should not need any extra tools or accessories to put the telescope together. The box contains the optical tube, finderscope, 2 eyepieces (20mm, 4mm), 3x barlow lens, aluminium tripod with accessory tray, and the SkyX astronomy software.

Both telescopes have an aperture of 70mm, and it’s important to note that a higher aperture will provide a better resolution. Not compatible with #93648 Off-Axis Guider, not compatible with #93519 2" Mirror Diagonal (discontinued)A few users claim that the tripod is too lightweight to be stable, but others say that it is suitable if you can balance it properly. One of the limitations of this telescope is its optical tube, which is only 2.7 inches/70mm in diameter. This makes it difficult to observe faint deep space objects such as galaxies and nebulae. Additionally, while the erect image diagonal makes it easier to observe from a standing position, it also reduces image quality by introducing additional optics into the light path.

This 2.7-inch/70mm achromatic refractor telescope is good value for those interested in observing planets and the moon. With a long length, it produces natural-looking views of these celestial bodies, while avoiding distracting false color. However, its limitations include struggling with deep sky objects and having a limiting magnitude of 11.7. To some extent this can be improved with a couple of better eyepieces but I personally would probably suggest moving to a nicer telescope such as the previously mentioned Orion Astroview 90mm refractor if you find you outgrow the Celestron Powerseeker 70AZ and still want more. Nevertheless, a 70mm aperture is more than sufficient to see many celestial objects in great detail. If you’re a beginner astronomer looking for an affordable telescope that provides clear views of the moon and planets, the Celestron Astromaster 70 AZ could be worth considering as it offers easy assembly and mobility. Aside from the apparent differences between each telescope, the similarities will make your final decision a little easier. However, if this isn’t too much of an issue for you, the 20mm eyepiece is an option on either telescope. Optical Design The Celestron AstroMaster 70az is a great choice for anyone looking for an entry-level telescope that doesn’t require too much of a learning curve. The AstroMaster 70AZ has a physical advantage over rivals when looking at planets and the moon. Lots of achromatic refracting telescopes aimed at beginners have a nasty side-effect when looking at bright objects like planets and the moon. Known as chromatic aberration or 'false color', it's evident as a purple or pinkish halo around planets and the moon. The AstroMaster 70AZ gets around that issue with its unusually long length, which helps keep planets and the moon looking natural. In my observations of both Jupiter and Saturn I found virtually no trace of false color, which looked much better in the AstroMaster 70AZ than in a shorter refractor I had close by.

Comparing the Celestron Powerseeker 70AZ to something like a Celestron Powerseeker 127eq reflector telescope it does not require near the cool down time (the 127eq has two mirrors which need to acclimate to the outside temperature before use or extremely blurry images could result) and requires no maintenance or adjustments such as the collimation required by the 127eq. The 127eq also requires learning how to use an equatorial telescope mount whereas the alt/az mount on the 70AZ is pretty much intuitive even to children with no experience. This makes the Celestron Powerseeker 70AZ a better choice for kids and first time telescope users. Using the scopeThe aluminium tripod with the accessory tray is not much different from the aluminium trays from the other models within this range. Being made of aluminium means it’s lightweight but the overall firmness of it’s stability may be a questioning factor. The accessory tray is a nice feature to have on your tripod as it’s perfectly fitted to store the different eyepieces and accessories and have them close by at your disposal. Where the Celestron Powerseeker 70AZ shines is actually using the telescope. With the alt/az mount there is nothing to learn, point it at something and look through the eyepiece, simple as that. Great for beginners or anyone looking to shop on a budget, the telescopes have plenty to offer, considering the cost. MANUAL YOKE MOUNT: Navigate the sky with our refractor telescope. It features a yoke mount with a slow-motion altitude rod for smooth and accurate pointing. Adjust rod to desired position, then easily secure by tightening cross knob.
