About this deal

The solutions to these problems may be obvious to some, but how bad it has to be before someone actually does something is anyone's guesss. It's worth noting that this book was published in 2001, and most essays were written in the 1990s -- as is evident in the sections that cover spousal/domestic abuse. In the pre-O.J. Simpson era, authorities in some places and times were much more lax in prosecuting domestic battery. In the U.S., the laws changed so that victims will have charges pressed on their behalf by the police -- and I hope it is that way in the U.K. at this point too. The only question is, can you really blame all this stuff on the Welfare State? And on pop music? And on pretty female celebrities who always seem to turn up wearing sexy new clothes at movie premieres? And on members of the royal family wanting to pierce their navels? The work explores the various worldviews of individuals and societies and the impositions of society on those within it. Dalrymple states that "...everyone has a Weltanschauung, a worldview, whether he knows it or not...Their ideas make themselves manifest even in the language they use." [15] The example stated is using passive speech by "those who refuse to accept responsibility for their acts." The type of language that the underclass uses, according to Dalrymple, professes their own ideas and ideology about the world. [15]

Spudgun: Oh thank God for that. I thought I'd had an accident. Richie and Eddie are having an argument] Richie: Okay, okay, okay. Let's sort this out. Now we're good friends Eddie, we've known each other for a long time, we can talk. And there is something I have been meaning to say to you for the last twenty-five years. Eddie: Ah! What's that? Richie: I hate you! I hate you! I hate you! Go away and crawl away and die in a ditch somewhere, you bastard! Eddie is trying to teach Richie how to play chess] Richie: Right, let me get this sorted out. Now the bent vicar stands next to the queen. And the queen goes in every direction. Eddie: That's right. Richie: [looking disgusted] And they let children play this, you say? I mean, it's pretty strong stuff, isn't it Eddie? You know, knights taking prawns? And apparently, if a prawn goes all the way he turns into a queen! Episode 3 - Burglary [ edit ] Richie: Eddie, do you want to be skinned alive and buggered? Eddie: (Pointing handgun at Richie) I'd like to see you try!Eddie: We've been burgled! Richie: Well you may have been, young man, but I have never in my life! As a Christian I'm so tightly clenched... OH! Oh, burgled! A sub-theme that is mentioned is the conflict between two groups, the Indian Sikhs and the Pakistani Muslims, who "not only cannot get along with each other but also cannot adapt to secular Britain." This conflict is shown throughout the collection, usually when an Indian or Pakistani woman is acting as a patient for Dalrymple, who then extracts the story for why the person is there. However, there are only a few stories told from the perspective of Indian Sikhs and Pakistani Muslims since the majority of the patients and prisoners that Dalrymple interviews are white. [4] Style [ edit ] The legions of helpers and carers, social workers and therapists, whose incomes and careers depend crucially on the supposed incapacity of large numbers of people to fend for themselves and behave responsibly. …their entire therapeutic worldview of the patient as the passive, helpless victim of illness legitimises the very behavious from which they are there to redeem him from. … ...the idea has become entrenched that if one does not know or understand the unconscious motives for one's acts, one is not truly responsible for them. Eddie begins forging money, forcing the duo and their friends to enter a pub quiz to pay off a thug. a b Hocutt, Max (6 December 2002). "Life at the Bottom". MentalHelp.net . Harold the Ironmonger, remember? We ate his dog! Richie: Oh right, we bloody won that bet, didn't we! Eddie: No, we didn't. That's why we had to eat his dog. Experiencing it on video, you get the best seat in the house without having to contend with an unruly or annoying audience, and I found the sheer exuberance of Rik and Ade's performances enjoyable. Richie: Go on, slidle over to the front and... sidle (laughs) slidle over to the front... Eddie: You want me slidle over to the front? Richie: I often write while I'm on stage. It's a great new word I've invented "slidle". Bottom: Weapons Grade Y-Fronts Tour 2003 [ edit ] Richie: [Thinking Eddies has a woman hidden in the bathroom]: Ah...ah...ah ha. Have you got a woman in here? A woman in here?! That's against house rules. we agreed, you're not allowed any women in here unless you get one for me at the same time, so we can really "do" it. Like in my favorite video: "Noddy goes Lap-Dancing".

Theodore Dalrymple, a retired British psychiatrist, who has spent years working with the underclass is a very keen observer of human nature, as is evidenced by this book. His dealings with thousands of these people at close quarters gave him much of the fodder for his thesis which is, I’m sure that some will disagree, that a lot of poverty is caused by dysfunctional values, values that those in power exploit and make worse by creating a culture of victims. Most of these stories and anecdotes are from Dalrymple’s time working in British slums and prisons.
