About this deal

Assuming, however, that I won’t be protesting anytime soon, I will be looking at it sitting on my shelf thinking that if you or anyone you know are turning your nose up at this lens because it was made in China, you need to be a better person than I was and stop acting like a pig like I did. The 7Artisans 35mm f1.2 is a compact APS-C lens designed for mirrorless cameras. It’s constructed with an all-metal housing and a 9-blade rounded aperture with only 6 elements. I wouldn’t consider this a pancake but it’s very short. If you love the idea of photographing models but don’t know where to start you might like my workshops 7Artisans 35mm f1.4 vs Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 Wide open contrast can be a touch low too. I’ve upped the overall contrast of the images in this post which of course hides it a bit, but you can still see the impact of the lower wide open contrast. As I wrote further up, I have gone through many 35mm lenses, but these lenses are the ones that are staying in my arsenal because they bring something unique to the table. The “fast four” | Shot on GFX50R | GF63mm f/2.8

I’ve also noticed some distortion – this seems to be most noticeable when closer focusing, though to be honest I perhaps havent shot it exhaustively enough to confirm that… One way or another, barrel distortion is definitely a thing here! You can see this in the image of Stanley above (look at the top of the radiator), and in the wall to the far right here:As a second love, the situation is different. If I was shooting portraits of someone who didn’t want to look like an athlete who spent too much time in the sun, or I was doing some lazy Sunday surf side lifestyle work, I would pull this lens off the shelf and give it a go – even in a commercial situation (2). Did you catch that? That was a not so well hidden hint. You missed it didnt you? I might be keeping this one. More on that in a minute. If the 7 artisans designing this lens were trying to create a modern or ultra-modern lens, they failed. If on the other hand they were looking to create what I call a “vintage-modern” lens, they should be cheering themselves and saying “mission accomplished.” I can’t explain what it is with the 7artisans 35mm f/1.2. On the spec sheet and in technical terms it’s one of the shittiest lenses I’ve ever mounted on my X-series cameras. But in spite of that, I just absolutely love the little thing. It is such a nice creative tool, and my pictures are better because of it. Sometimes I just have to succumb to the fact that there is sooooo much more to photography than the quest for ultimate IQ. The images above give a good illustration of what type of bokeh you can expect with this lens. I have to say that I really like it.

The lens exhibits and insane amount of barreldistortion. I don’t think I’ve ever seen examples of it that is that pronounced! It’s correctable in post, obviously, but still it is very pronounced. Just look at the windowlines in this image below. X-Pro3 | 7artisans 35mm f/1.2 @f/1.2 | Notice the VERY pronounced barrel distortion When I first heard about the 7Artisans 35mm f/1.2 lens, I must admit I was a little bit disappointed that it wasn’t a full frame lens. The first images I saw of it looked a little odd too – they certainly didn’t do the design of the lens any favours. I’ve also not been massively overexcited about the CSC lenses 7Artisans produce, with my main interest really being in what they make for M-mount cameras. As such, I’ve found myself all the more surprised with how smitten I am with the 35mmc 1.2 – it’s a crazy little lens, but I can’t help but really like it. It’s cheap
