Literary hoaxes are not an uncommon occurrence in the realm of memoir and in internetland we now have the act of catfishing too. This was one of the first books I choose from NetGalley, and I chose it because the cover seemed interesting. As the deadline approached, I sort of lost interest. Part of it was how obscure it is; this is a book that isn’t even being published in North America (based on the available information). However, I said I would review it, so I made a point to at least try. I am beyond happy that I did. I loved pretty much everything about this book. písania mi neskutočne sadol. Nenudila som sa pri čítaní (ako pri iných takýchto knihách), malo to dynamiku a autorka sa vždy zameriala na to podstatné. Hoci sem tam skončila v deji do minulosti, vždy to malo logiku a dokázala vo mne vyvolat rôzne emócie.
A story like this only shows people that stories such as this are not of the past. People are still living in ghettos in places like Slovakia and seeing what the poor have to do to survive Myslela som, že budem mať knihu zaradenú na poličke s Hillbilly Elegy a Vzdelanou, ale bola to väčšia nálož - pomery, z ktorých pochádzala, prostredie, v ktorom vyrastala, veci, ktoré sa jej diali, jej rodičia. S napätím som čítala o Eliškinom nepriaznivom osude, o tŕnistých cestách, ktorými musela, ako dieťa prejsť a hlavne o sile odhodlania a vytrvalosti.

My mother was a prostitute. My grandmother and great-grandmother were prostitutes. Maybe I should have given the family business a chance. But Eliska is given a way out after her mother scrapes together the money to smuggle her out of the country to a new life. Arriving in England in a washing-machine box, she thinks she has made it. But as a young girl alone in a new country, Eliska soon sees her dream turn into a nightmare when she is forced to live and work under unbearable abuse as she tries to forge her way alone. A remarkable book about the hardest of beginnings written in a voice that is vibrant, sparkling, full of irrepressible humour, compassionate intelligence and ultimately forgiveness' Catherine Simpson Drobné mínus pre mňa bolo, že som sa občas ťažšie orientovala v menách a dátumoch, zahmlené pre mňa ostali podrobnosti obchodu s ľuďmi, Eliška ukazuje veci zo svojho pohľadu, nie to, čo stálo v pozadí, ale niektoré okolnosti sa mi ťažko chápali bez podrobnejšieho vysvetlenia. Eliska Tanzer's memoir of her life growing up as one of an outcast people in Slovakia is a stark reminder of how unequal opportunities can be, not only on a global scale but within countries and then towns. Ancestry or skin colour should not be the factors which decide a person's future practically from their birth, but all too often this is still the case and, other than for a quirk of fate, I would never have read Tanzer's searingly honest memoir because she would never have had the opportunity to write it. She quite possibly would not even have been able to write. Heartbreaking to see how from such an early age, Eliska and her cousins attended a class led by their aunt on how to be a prostitue and
