About this deal

When five students are put into detention, only four come out alive. The victim is Simon - creator of the notorious school gossip app - and his death is no accident. All four survivors have a motive for murder. And one of them is definitely lying. the characters: I liked Bronwyn and Nate enough to stay I didn't hate them. Not Addy and Cooper though. They were laughable and Addy's whole empowering story line was corny. Also, you're not going to catch me uplifting a bunch of cheaters. And everyone else didn't have a prominent personality and I didn't care for them. romance: I thought it was tolerable, but instead of being a sub plot, it had a big focus on it and I feel as if it may have taken away from the actual story. Why did I end up caring about this romance more than the main conflict?? Though the way things played out with the romance, I didn't like (see summary). This book was a pleasant surprise! It was refreshing and a change from the usual young-adult contemporary. Seeing the first book’s protagonists as supporting characters was enjoyable experiment. And I actually root for Bronwyn (I hope I spelled right! What a challenging name!) and Nate from the beginning so I liked to see how their a little angsty romantic relationship improved. And of course I liked to see Cooper again!

I don't read too many contemporaries but gosh-dang was I glued to this plot - the way the clues were revealed slowly and steadily. It was thrilling. This is apparently a sequel but it was more like a spin-off. Yes we get little cameos of the previous characters (which I adored) but the plot revolves around a set of different characters and I feel like you can read it as a standalone. Two Can Keep a Secret<— not part of the series but same type of title and cover so I’m including it here so you don’t miss it. 😉 Everyone's a target. And now that someone unexpected has returned to Bayview, things are starting to get deadly. But we all know what Bayview’s real game is, right?” she continues. “Revenge. Except they keep doing it wrong.

Before detention is over for the day, Simon is dead, and apparently, it wasn't an accident. It's not long before investigators discover that the next day, Simon was planning to publish items about Cooper, Bronwyn, Addy, and Nate—items which could potentially destroy all of their lives. Suddenly the four of them are the suspects in Simon's murder, and are pariahs among their fellow students, most of whom hated Simon until he died, then turned him into a tragic figure. Andreeva, Nellie (September 13, 2017). "E! Developing One of Us Is Lying Mystery Novel as TV Series". Deadline Hollywood. Archived from the original on February 3, 2023 . Retrieved February 1, 2023. I also loved the gaming element in this one. It was so sinister, perfectly-plotted and right up my alley!Addy's about to leave Bayview behind and take a leap into the unknown and Phoebe's tired of keeping secrets. Everybody's ready to move on. For a mystery book centered around a game of Truth or Dare, the game was hardly mentioned at all. The mystery element was overshadowed by the other drama and messy storylines. Two years ago, Simon Kelleher and his gossip app had Bayview High in its grip. So when he died of a mysterious allergic reaction during detention, it inevitably became the talk of the town. Thompson, Avery (October 6, 2021). " One of Us Is Lying Cast & Author Tease 'Integral' Book Scenes & 'New Directions' in Series". Hollywood Life. Archived from the original on October 9, 2021 . Retrieved October 9, 2021. Ight, seriously, these 5 kids get in trouble and have detention where they're talking and it's all detention stuff when one of the kids starts choking and having an allergic reaction. he's taken to the hospital and later the four kids find out he dies. His death is all suspicious and now all four of 'em are suspects and we need to figure who dunnit and who's lying.

There are a couple of characters in the book that are said to be depressed and one of them was Simon, the boy who died. The final plot twist is that Simon wasn't murdered, but killed himself. Again, I think that some of Simon's feelings that surround his depression could be very relateable to teenagers, but I had three huge issues with how his suicide was portrayed. At Bayview High, five students–Simon, Addy, Cooper, Bronwyn, and Nate–are given detention. Simon, known for starting an online gossip group with his friend Janae to snitch on his classmates, suffers a sudden and fatal allergic reaction. Each of the four students had a motive to kill Simon, and after it is determined his death was not an accident, an investigation is started. Bronwyn, Nate, Cooper, and Addy are suspects for murdering the school's gossiper, Simon. When the 5 of them were in detention, the last thing they expect is for Simon to drop dead... Unless one of them planned the whole thing. First, kudos to whoever was in charge for finally getting a dang blurb right. This absolutely was “The Breakfast Club Meets Pretty Little Liars.” Per usual, I was not the target audience for this selection, but hey the sun shines on an old dog’s butt every once in a while because I thought it was . . . .

NOW A MAJOR NETFLIX SERIES. This stunning collector's edition of the internationally bestselling YA smash hit, ONE OF US IS LYING, contains a thrilling BONUS chapter! This book is so problematic and most of it is NEVER challenged. First of all, can we talk about the immense amounts of slut-shaming? I could handle it if it was coming just from the characters and/or was actually being challenged consistently, but 1) it isn't challenged every time in the dialogue, and 2) the author contributes to the slut-shaming narrative regarding women cheating. I listen to music while drafting, and have put a couple of my playlists on Spotify. You can find one for One of Us Is Lying here, and for Two Can Keep a Secret here. Both are samplings of the songs I listened to on repeat while writing. The Bayview Four have been cleared of any crimes, and for the most part, they have moved on with their lives. The teens all tried their best to leave that traumatic period where it belongs; in the past. Tightly plotted and brilliantly written, with sharp, believable characters, this whodunit is utterly irresistible' - HEAT
