About this deal

With a wretched priest on a war path believing himself to be an avenging angel it dives into a pool of religious hypocrisy and mad mental puritan delusion. Before resigning his position, Father Cutler consults Father Duggan (Mervyn Johns) about his feelings for Vanessa. Anthony Sharp gives a good performance in his role as Father Xavier Meldrum, the priest whose actions make him a really unlikeable character, while Susan Penhaligon is decent as Jenny, the young woman who is determined to try and get away from the priest, but she knows it won’t be easy. He's less than overjoyed, however, to find out about the blackmail: "Bugger the church authorities, I'm gonna sort 'im art meself!

House of Mortal Sin is similar to House of Whipcord, as Walker turns his sights on a priest who takes it upon himself to cleanse people of their sins. Then our star "Jenny" (Susan Penhaligon) meets up with her old school buddy (Norman Eshley) who is now a priest. So he's perfect casting as sexually obsessive Catholic priest Father Meldrum in this film, a man who gets his kicks in the confession box by asking his parishioners for more sexual details than is strictly necessary. Fumbling with an A to Z as he steers, Father Bernard Cutler (Norman Eshley) drives through Richmond. Meldrum uses his status and crazed persistence to work his way into Jenny's life by any means necessary. I wanted to revisit some of Pete Walker's filmography because it's been over a decade since I've seen any of his '70s horror films and when they popped up in Arrow's "last chance" streaming section it was time to jog my memory. Jenny leaves Bob in her flat fr a moment when she realises that she's not only lost her keys but left her cigarettes in a phone box as well, and by he time she gets back he's been slapped about by an unseen assailant and had boiling coffee thrown in his face (an act that causes his face to explode into a bloody mess, for some reason). And I haven't even mentioned we get another memorable turn from Walker regular Sheila Keith as Sharp's foreboding, eyepatch-wearing housekeeper Miss Brabazon. She goes to the presbytery and encounters Mrs Meldrum, who knows that her son is mad and begs Vanessa to help.Valerie's parents are sitting watch the telly when their daughter walks in, goes upstairs and lobs herself out of the window, hitting the ground with a sickening thud. The story concerns a concerned young girl who goes to revelation at the local church; alas, the sexually-angry priest she acknowledges to becomes fascinated with her. Best known as the home office minister in A Clockwork Orange, he had an extremely distinctive, instantly recognisable look and sound, with a ball-shaped head and massive hook nose, and the plummiest, most clipped English accent imaginable. This is another tale of moral hypocrisy, misogyny, and perversion at the hands of supposed peacekeepers, very much like House of Whipcord except that Whipcord veers into the “women in prison” genre whereas this one focuses on an insane and corrupt priest.

All through the film there are some lovely touches - Sheila Keith is awesome as Meldrum's one-eyed housekeeper, threatening his infirm mother ("He's gone out again, I'm afraid… you're all alone again… with me") and simply raising one eyebrow on surveying the scene following the rosary bead strangulation.

Its plot concerns a deranged priest who takes it upon himself to punish his parishioners for their moral transgressions. With films like FRIGHTMARE, HOUSE OF WHIPCORD (both 1974) and SCHIZO (1976) under their belt (THE FLESH AND BLOOD SHOW [1972] and THE COMEBACK [1977] are two of the very few of Walker's 70's horror films that McGillivray did not work on), each dealing with dark secrets and a hint that the Church may have too much power over everyone's life (both moral and professional), Pete Walker and David McGillivray made thinking-man's horror films of the 70's, even though they didn't skimp on the gore. After finding out that Meldrum tapes his confessions and uses them for blackmail, Jenny runs away (again), and is overjoyed (? Haven’t watched this in quite a long time and it was just the late night excursion into seedy giallo-esque trash that I needed.

Tetramesh identifies this as Lowther Parade in Barnes, Greater London, facing number 147 Church Road. Please note there is paper lift at the top and a 1 1/2 inch closed tear which we have repaired with restoration tape. The next morning, Jenny makes her way to Father Meldrum's presbytery, where he lives with with his frail Mother and Miss Brabazon the housekeeper. THE CONFESSIONAL is also known as HOUSE OF MORTAL SIN (also available on Blu-Ray from Redemption Films/Kino Lorber under this title) and THE CONFESSIONAL MURDERS. A sadistic, wretched, corrupt, homicidal individual who probably couldn’t have been portrayed any better than what Sharp accomplished. Was it just that her parents' house was in such darkness that she fell out of the window by accident?
