The album and its singles earned Carpenters four Grammy Award nominations including Album of the Year. After only the first take, Richard claimed that her performance was "perfect" as it was, and did not need repeating. It has been said that the strength of these recordings is what caused Richard Carpenter to ask his sister to front the band for their live performances instead of playing behind the drums.

Features of this compilation include a newly recorded version of "Top of the World", "Ticket to Ride" and a number of musical introductions and segues between the songs "Superstar", "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "Goodbye to Love", the latter two were sped up in pitch, much to the regret of Richard in subsequent years.According to Richard Carpenter, Randy Sparks was the opening act for Richard Carpenter at his club in Westwood in late 1967-early 1968. Rainy Days and Mondays" was the Carpenters' second Nichols/Williams hit, after " We've Only Just Begun" of the Close to You album the previous year. The production is top notch, Richard's arrangements are impeccable, especially on Solitaire, Aurora/Eventide and I Can Dream. Richard gave the album this title because he doesn't like the term " greatest hits" because he felt it was "an overused thing".

While Richard penned compositions with writing partner, John Bettis, many of the duos' hits were written by others and some were cover versions of established hits for other artists, such as The Beatles and Motown's, The Marvelettes. I've unsealed the LP's and played four so far, three of which have been pressed significantly off-centre.Written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell, "Superstar" had been made popular by Rita Coolidge in 1970, but the Carpenters' version, released as a single in August 1971, became an international hit. Let Me Be the One" was remixed in 1991, with an extended beginning, end, and a different piano line.
