About this deal

I also love the twists that she placed so carefully into her book, so just when you thought you understood everything you are again learning something new. Plus, she made a robot so likeable and adorable too. In other words, the apocalypse is less whiz bang disaster porn and more intrinsically, relatably human, the kind of event that we can grapple with and understand, and more importantly, connect with in a very real and deep way. Thank you to Walker Books for providing me with a free copy of this book in return for an honest review. Which is not easy, of course; but for all the existential burden they must carry, and they are, as you might expect, wise beyond their years, James brings them to life so vividly and so authentically, that everything about their utterly unique lives feels wholly understandable and relatable. Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments

James is innovative in both character and plot. There is a seamless integration of diverse characters; sexuality, gender, disability and race. It is a refreshing take on the world we live in, and to see multiple variants of the human experience reflected in the novel makes it all the more authentic. It is an encyclopaedia of everything humankind values, and it prompt the reader to reflect on what it is they value, and how they too might react if this was to happen to them. Lost meets The Hunger Games in the thrilling new young adult novel from C.L. Taylor, the Sunday Times and million-copy bestselling author. My free online Continue reading “YA Book Prize shortlisting, a creative writing activity & bookrecs” Her books have sold over fifty thousand copies in the UK alone, and been translated into five languages worldwide. She has been described as ‘Gripping romantic sci-fi’ by the Wall Street Journal and ‘A strange, witty, compulsively unpredictable read which blows most of its new YA-suspense brethren out of the water’ by Entertainment Weekly. The Quiet at the End of the World includes some gems like adorable robots that honestly make you want to have one for yourself so you can be best friends with it; perfect world building that gets into your brain and helps you to imagine every little detail; an incredible storyline with a terrifying premise that is completely intriguing, but you’d absolutely never EVER want it to actually happen in real life (fingers crossed); a world-shattering plot twist; and on top of all that, perfect bisexual and trans representation. Ugh. This book is EVERYTHING.

For all the many and varied ways that humanity could slash its collective throat, the trip to the apocalypse almost always looks eerily the same. There’s great representation here too - bi and trans, deaf, Chinese characters. So good to see so much. This time it would actually be remembered, though. With the internet, it will never be forgotten,” (P. 155) Some of the themes explored are similar to those in James' previous book, The Loneliest Girl in the Universe, where Romy copes with living alone on a ship in deep space. Here, the main character has grown up knowing that, after the small community of older people she lives in die, she and her friend Shen are going to be the last two humans on Earth, watching as humanity winds down to a close.
