The village originated as a Viking settlement in the l0th century and the Domesday Book gives the name as Muceltoit, Norse for 'great clearing'. At the lower end of the village near to Laythorpe Farm, built 1737, a natural drift mound can be identified, which is reputed to have been important to the Vikings. Translation of Laythorpe indicates 'the place of law or judgement'.

Delightfully situated in an idyllic location enjoying a superb aspect is a rather unique stone built detached home offering deceptively spacious living accommodation with character and charm enjoying formal gardens, driveway and garage. The Free Methodist chapel, built in 1875, continues as the focus of religious and social activities. The tradition of baptism with water from a nearby spring is still maintained. Surprisingly, a second chapel, built in 1854, also flourished for almost 100 years in what is now Overcroft Cottage. Several older residents remember Sunday School Treats, Pie and Pea Suppers and choral concerts, that they enjoyed early in the 20th century.
