About this deal

She dropped to the ground and the blade plunged into the chest of a Riki, sending him to his knees. His huge body fell onto her, pinning her to the dirt. The blood bubbling up from his mouth poured out, covering her pale skin in a stark shining red. Sparse open clusters contain less than a hundred stars, while rich ones may have thousands. Open clusters form from nebulae. All open clusters are relatively young objects, generally no more than a few hundred million years old. We know the open clusters we observe are young because given enough time, the stars in an open cluster disperse due to gravitational interaction within the cluster. If we were able to follow a single open cluster from its formation, we would see the cluster disperse stars throughout its entire galactic journey. Approximately 1,700 open clusters are known. I ran to her, hooking my fingers into his armor vest from the other side of his body, and sunk down, pulling him with me. When she was free, she sprang to her feet, finding her sword and looking around us. I gripped the handle of my axe and pried it up, out of the bones in his chest. I’m not worried,” she smirked, “but I’ll bet my supper that I kill more Riki than you today.” She tossed my axe to me.

I was fighting a man. He was about to… I shuddered, remembering how close to death I’d come—closer than I’d ever been. Iri came out of the fog and saved me. He was with the Riki. I stood, taking his hand and pulling him toward the tree line. We have to find him! His chin lifted at the strangled sound and his eyes searched the body-littered expanse. When they found me, they transfigured from worry into fear. He dropped his shield and ran to me. Bleak, beautiful, and deadly, Sky in the Deep is both a gritty, gut-wrenching tale of war and a thoughtful meditation on identity, family, and faith–a story with the ferocity of its main character as well as her raw and tender heart.”

This. Is so much. Everything. I can’t. I just. I want to find the right words to explain why, or even how this grabbed me by the throat and squeezed until I forgot how to even breathe and no longer even cared that I couldn’t. But I can’t. I’ll try, but I already know I’m going to fail to do it justice. A unique premise, with great pacing and a protagonist who I found myself favoring. She’s not necessarily likeable, but I found myself able to relate to her in quite a few ways (I’m not a half, but was born and raised in Japan). It won’t stay closed if you’re using your axe. Kalda dropped the needle into the bowl beside her before wiping her hands on her bloodstained apron. The last of them disappeared into the trees behind her and I turned, looking for the blue wool tunic my father was wearing beneath his armor. Aghi!

This was an enjoyable mystery/sci-fi/thriller set in space. It doesn't do anything new to the genre (really of either mystery or sci-fi) but it is a good example of both kinds of stories, and it has likable characters you want to root for. It's also pretty queer! Only people who have uteruses are allowed on the mission to colonize another planet, because space/fuel limitations mean not that many people can go, and they need everyone who does to be able to give birth while on board. It plays with ideas I've seen in sci-fi before, A.I. and perception, virtual reality, near-environmental collapse Earth, societal fractures that carry through to space, friendship, and sabotage. The retreat whistle for the Riki sounded and the bodies, still tangled in battle, parted to reveal the green field now painted red with the death of clansmen. I took off, weaving through the retreating Riki and grabbing hold of the fair-haired men one by one, searching their faces. The Plague has left a population divided between Elites and Ordinaries—those who have powers and those who don’t; now, an Ordinary teen fights for her life. Always.” I looked behind us where our clansmen stood shoulder to shoulder in a sea of red leathers and bronze, all waiting for the call. Mýra and I had fought for our place at the front. She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and family while daring to put her faith in the people she’s spent her life hating.Always always always! I have a playlist for Sky in the Deep. Are you working on anything at this time that you can share with us? This is absolutely brutal and stark, but with so much texture and depth and richness of the world that I want to throw away my flip-flops and messy bun for battle armor and braids. The MC is pure wrath and solid conviction, and I love that her level of ferocity and concept of honor is paired with so much raw emotion. FIERCE, VIVID, AND VIOLENTLY BEAUTIFUL. ” —Stephanie Garber, New York Times bestselling author of Caraval I just finished the companion novel for Sky, but we haven’t announced details yet. It’s coming Fall 2019. Lastly, do you have any book recommendations for us? I will begin this review by saying that I read this book in one sitting, no dinner cooked, no homework done, no sleep gotten. So, be prepared when you open this novel up to be completely useless for 4 – 5 hours. Sky in the Deep completely blew me away.
