About this deal

The 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | C weighs in at 470g, and when attached to the SIGMA fp, the entire setup is 890g. The supreme portability afforded by a camera system that weighs less than 1kg gives photographers a huge amount of freedom and flexibility to achieve their creative vision. It’s also a perfect combination for film-makers looking for a high-performance, lightweight, easy-to-handle camera system that works well with a gimbal and other accessories. This large-aperture, standard zoom that is light and small enough for casual outings will open up new photographic possibilities for better and more creative results. The SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary offers a new and improved photographic experience for mirrorless users needing a fast-aperture, standard zoom lens. Its premium, intuitive build makes it as exciting to use the lens as it is to see the incredible images it can produce, inspiring you to start achieving your creative potential. On the telephoto end the maximum magnification ratio is 0.22x. Close-up subjects shot at 70mm can appear soft and dreamy.

In the 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens, Sigma employed an iris diaphragm with 9 rounded blades, which has resulted in quite nice bokeh in our view. In addition to prioritizing portability, SIGMA’s optical engineers introduced a new combination of coatings and structural elements that make this standard zoom well-equipped for use in a wide range of shooting environments. Likewise, the latest production and manufacturing techniques were employed to ensure exceptionally high build quality.

So when does a zoom make sense? When it covers more than one easily discernable FL. But 28-70 doesn't do that. It has a single useful perspective for me. A "normal" perspective. I would need to augment it on both sides with a lens that is wider and a lens that is more tele. I prefer distinct focal length differences. A 24mm is perspectively easily discernable from a 40mm and a 40mm easily discernable from an 85mm. The tradeoff of 4mm on the wide end seems to make the difference. This an extremely attractive lens for any photographer wanting a solid lens for carrying around in long stretches and combined with an interesting optical signature, this is a very practical lens for general use. The new SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary redefines the standard zoom for mirrorless cameras by combining outstanding optical performance, an F/2.8 constant aperture and a lightweight and compact body. The optical design of the 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | C is based on the existing 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | A, but with a focal range starting at 28mm, allowing for a significantly smaller and lighter lens body while maintaining superb optical performance. It is the smallest and lightest lens in its class*. Remaining true to the Contemporary line's core concept of maintaining an optimal balance between optical performance and lens size, this new optic delivers professional quality results in a body small and light enough to take on a casual outing. This lens provides the same high-level optical performance and precision as Sigma's 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art but in a much lighter, more portal and more manageable shell. The lens is 359g lighter than its counterpart and this is mainly due to the use of a TSC Polycarbonate (TSC) in its construction. This can bring about some concerns about processing accuracy, but rest assured, there's been no compromise with this lens build. This type of polycarbonate provides a similar level of thermal shrinkage as aluminium and this helps reduce the difference between thermal shrinkage of the lens's metal and non-metal parts. This results in stable performance, even when transiting between extreme temperatures. What's in the box? For starters, here’s the optical range in practice, starting at 28mm for standard wide views, before zooming into 70mm for short telephoto coverage. By starting at 28 rather than 24mm, Sigma’s been able to reduce the cost and weight. It's significantly lighter, by 44% in fact, and slightly shorter than its big brother, the outstanding Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art, which weighs in at 830 grams and measures nearly 12.5cm in length.

Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc. Both the Sigma and Tamron f2.8 zooms are designed not only as lighter and more affordable alternatives to 24-70mm f2.8 models, but also as step-ups from budget kit zooms like Sony’s own FE 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 which costs roughly half their price but suffers from a dimmer and variable aperture that’s two whole stops slower at the long-end. Okay let’s see what the new Sigma’s all about. Rendering of blurred areas is always something I like to test and compare so here’s the 28-70 2.8 at 70mm, shot from the closest focusing distance at this focal length, quoted as 38cm. So if size and weight are key, the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is the clear winner, albeit whilst offering 5mm shorter reach than the Tamron 28-75mm. On cameras where lens aberration correction is controlled with ‘ON’ or ‘OFF’ in the camera menu, please set all aberration correction functions to ‘ON'(AUTO).

Like other lenses in Sigma’s I-series Contemporary line-up, the 20mm has impressive build quality based on a coated brass mounting plate, a metal barrel and even a metal lens hood and lens cap, the latter of which is magnetic. A more regular plastic lens cap is also supplied in the box. The construction features multiple weather-seals and is dust- and moisture-resistant, it combines intuitive handling with fast autofocus and impressive image quality, making it an ideal ultra-wide-angle lens for architectural interiors, sweeping landscapes, astrophotography and more besides. As before, closing the aperture gradually improves the quality, brightening the corners and boosting the detail. If you’re a pixel-peeper with a high-res body, it’s definitely worth shooting detailed views at f5.6 or f8 rather than wide-open.Cameras Mirrorless Cameras DSLR Cameras Digital Compact Cameras Video Cameras Lenses Mirrorless Camera Lenses DSLR Lenses Lens Filters Lens Accessories The Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary redefines the standard zoom for mirrorless cameras bycombining outstanding optical performance, an F2.8 constant aperture and a lightweight and compact body. Cat's eye effect is quite noticeable when shooting wide-open and can appear quite a long way towards the center of the image frame. In terms of features, the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is a little sparsely attired, especially when compared to the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art. We didn't experience very much "hunting" at all, either in good or bad light, with the lens accurately focusing almost all of the time. It's also a very quiet performer, which makes this lens equally well-suited to both video recording and more candid stills shooting. The Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary for Sony E-Mount and L-Mount is a new fast standard zoom lens for 35mm full-frame Sony, Leica, Panasonic and Sigma cameras. Life is all about compromises. With a bright, continuous aperture and minimal size and weight being the key elements of its design, it's not surprising at all that the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN's image quality can't quite compete with larger, more expensive alternatives like Sigma's own 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art.
