Manufacturers distinguish their pencils by grading them, but there is no common standard. [61] Two pencils of the same grade but different manufacturers will not necessarily make a mark of identical tone nor have the same hardness. [a] Staedtler Pencil, video". These are traditional pencils with coloured cores that can be used for art or organising handwritten notes. Coloured pencils are often given as promotional gifts with custom branding alongside colouring books or gifts for children. Grease Pencils

I’m not sure about Conte’s other pencils. They seem to have difficulty distinguishing their products. The pencils I am familiar with are basically the crayons in pencil form. Of course we do care most about the marks our pencils make, so I’d also like to canvass the hive mind for insights about how the different pencils’ marks can be removed (or not) and can be mixed/blended/smudged— by fingers, by water, by eraser, by cotton cloth, etc. And shininess-vs.-matteness is an important category. One effect of this was that "during World War II rotary pencil sharpeners were outlawed in Britain because they wasted so much scarce lead and wood, and pencils had to be sharpened in the more conservative manner – with knives." Conté used integer numbers that started at 1, with higher numbers indicating softer leads, while Thoreau used higher numbers to designate harder leads ( Petroski 1990, p. 157). It is believed that Thoreau developed independently his method of mixing clay and graphite, and his use of numbers to designate grades is evidence that he was at least aware of Conté methods and tried to reverse engineer them.

Solid Graphite Pencils

Also known as non-photo blue pencils, the non-reproducing types make marks that are not reproducible by photocopiers [48] (examples include "Copy-not" by Sanford and "Mars Non-photo" by Staedtler) or by whiteprint copiers (such as "Mars Non-Print" by Staedtler). Pencil, from Old French pincel, from Latin penicillus a "little tail" (see penis; pincellus is Latin from the post-classical period [1]) originally referred to an artist's fine brush of camel hair, also used for writing before modern lead or chalk pencils. Pencils create marks by physical abrasion, leaving a trail of solid core material that adheres to a sheet of paper or other surface. They are distinct from pens, which dispense liquid or gel ink onto the marked surface. Hi Dlamini, I imagine charcoal will be cheaper to source as a raw material however it’s harder to handle during manufacture. If cheapness is your aim, it might be worth going for graphite as you often you can mix a filler or clay in with the graphite to make it harder or softer and to keep costs down. That being said I’m unsure of the import costs of materials into Swaziland.

Also called ‘woodless pencils’, these pencils are entirely made of graphite without the wooden exterior. These pencils are often used by artists for sketches and drawings. Because they have more writing surface area, they are excellent for shading in pencil drawings. Liquid Pencils The Zebra Sharbo X CB8 is a pen that its user can personalize and define. Pen Pencil grades vary "depending upon the manufacturer, when the pencils are made, and the source of graphite and clay. I’m new here, and this is my first post (so no links even though I allude to some info I’ve found out there). I’m been inspired to join and seek your wisdom by the purest nerdery, but it is a practical issue. Without buying and trying out every carbon and charcoal pencil ever made, can we use our collective wisdom to give a better account of their natures and differences than the manufacturers are ever going to provide in their marketing blurbs?
