There is a Wikipedia reference as to the origin of the name, however I cannot find any written references, either to confirm the Wikipedia suggestion, or to offer an alternative. When researching these posts, I prefer to have at least two different written sources, so for the purposes of the post I cannot find the source. According to the 2011 census, Islington has the highest population density of local authorities in England and Wales—13,875 people per square kilometre. [11] Berners Hall, attached to the Upper Street entrance of the Royal Agricultural Hall, became the home of the famed Mohhawk Minstrels in the 1870s. Immensley popular, they remained at the venue for almost a century before moving to Piccadilly. Their old home became the Islington Empire and some of the music hall greats such as Dan Leno, Cissie Loftus and Little Tich appeared there. Trams and omnibuses give an invaluable gratuitous advertisement to the inns at certain points on their route; and one of the hostelries best known in all London – by name at least – from this cause is the Angel. For here trams start and stop, and innumerable omnibuses converge and diverge. The Angel occupies a commanding position at the corner of the High Street, Islington, and of Pentonville Road, leading to King’s Cross, while it faces the end of the City Road, Goswell Road, and St. John’s Street Road. It is no wonder, therefore that the pavement in front of it should be always thronged.”

There are also several London Overground stations in the borough, all but one of which are in London fare zone 2: replacement of the hotel with a theatre was being contemplated. Instead, in 1880, the Angel, now promoted to Patisserie Factory. On the east side of the yard is a midnineteenth century workshop that may have originated as Above: John Gielgud and Ninette de Valois, who were both given the chance to pursue their artistic dreams by Lilian Baylis

The Angel is an area on the northern fringes of Central London within the London Borough of Islington. It is 2 miles (3.2km) north-northeast of Charing Cross on the Inner Ring Road at a busy transport intersection. The area is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in London. It is a significant commercial and retail centre, and a business improvement district. The Angel straddles the ancient boundary of the parishes of Clerkenwell and Islington that later became the metropolitan boroughs of Finsbury and Islington. It is named from the former Angel Inn which stood on the corner of Islington High Street and Pentonville Road. Since 1965 the whole area has formed part of the London Borough of Islington in Greater London.
