Until 1974, Gower was administered as a rural district. It was then merged with the county borough of Swansea. From 1974 to 1996, it formed the Swansea district. [1] Since 1996, Gower has been administered as part of the unitary authority of the City and County of Swansea. The western part of the AONB is included in the Register of Landscapes of Outstanding Historic Interest in Wales, for the rich evidence of a long sequence of land use and occupation from the prehistoric to industrial periods. This includes Iron Age forts and a surviving medieval open field system (known as the Vile, near Rhossili). Mumbles set the scene for a six-part drama Ennals Point featuring Welsh actor Philip Madoc. The series focused on the local lifeboat crew (1982)
The interior is mainly farmland and common land. The population mainly resides in small villages and communities with some suburban development in eastern Gower; part of the Swansea Urban Area. [8] History [ edit ] Stone Age [ edit ] For many, this is the best of the Gower walks in the Gower Peninsula. You need to know the tide times for the day – posted at the National Trust shop in Rhossili village and the notice board at the top of the walk, and time your departure for around two-and-a-half hours before low tide. There are six castles on the Gower Peninsula: Landimore Castle—also known as Bovehill Castle— Oystermouth Castle, Oxwich Castle, Pennard Castle, Penrice Castle, Weobley Castle and numerous cairns and standing stones. Away from the smaller beaches, you get whole swathes of Gower almost to yourself, even in summer when the bigger Gower beaches easily absorb the crowds.The northern coast is mainly salt marsh, and is used for raising Gower salt marsh lamb which was registered as a Protected Designation of Origin in 2021 under UK law [5] [6] and in 2023 under EU law. [7] Llanmadoc Hill dominates the north-west corner of Gower, and it’s worth the short climb (either from Llanmadoc or Llangennith) for unrivalled views of the Burry Inlet, the vast beaches of Whiteford Sands and Broughton Bay. As an Anglo-Norman peninsula isolated from its Welsh hinterland but with coastal links to other parts of south Wales and southwest England, it developed its own Gower dialect of English. The best of Gower coastal walks passes Paviland Cave, location of the oldest ceremonial burial in Britain (over 30,000 years) but don’t try to reach it unless you’re an experienced and well-equipped climber.

Where to eat
In 1535, the Act of Union resulted in the Lordship of Gower becoming part of the historic county of Glamorgan with the southwest part becoming the hundred of Swansea. Stay on dry land, and you will be missing out! It gets some of the most awesome waves in Britain, and sandy Llangennith has been popular amongst surfers for decades. Rhossili Bay has also been enjoying some limelight on the world stage too. It has been voted into the top ten of beaches in Britain for the last eight years and is currently the 11th best beach in Europe (TripAdvisor, Travellers’ Choice Awards).
