About this deal

There's more good to come, though. Apple's most recent software update brought a 'Deep Fusion' feature that takes nine exposures and fuses them into a single image after a bunch of machine learning and pixel-by-pixel processing. With flight mode engaged and the display set to 170cd/m2 to ensure a consistent brightness across all phones we test, the iPhone 11 Pro lasted 17hrs 15mins before requiring a recharge. That’s four and a half hours longer than the iPhone Xs, which represents a significant 35% over last year’s phone. That’s not surprising given the battery has grown in capacity but it’s still welcome and brings the iPhone 11 Pro almost level with the Samsung Galaxy S10. It’s still no match for the Snapdragon 855-equipped phones we’ve seen recently, though, such as the Xiaomi Mi 9. The other two cameras are similar to last year. There’s a primary 12-megapixel f/1.8 camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and a field of view equivalent to a 26mm lens on a camera with a full-frame sensor. And, finally, there’s a 2x telephoto camera with a resolution of 12-megapixels, an aperture of f/2, OIS and a field of view equivalent to a 52mm lens on a camera with a full-frame sensor. iOS 15 has also added FaceTime improvements, SharePlay, better notifications, a redesigned Safari, and quite a lot more. Triple 12MP Ultra Wide, Wide and Telephoto Cameras, Ultra Wide: f/2.4 Aperture and 120Degree Field of View, Wide: f/1.8 Aperture, Telephoto: f/2.0 Aperture, Portrait Mode with Advanced Bokeh and Depth Control, Portrait Lighting with Six Effects (Natural, Studio, Contour, Stage, Stage Mono, High-key Mono), Dual Optical Image Stabilisation (Wide and Telephoto), Five Element Lens (Ultra Wide), Six-element Lens (Wide and Telephoto), Brighter True Tone flash with Slow Sync, Panorama (up to 64MP), 100% Focus Pixels (Wide), Night Mode, Auto Adjustments, Next Generation Smart HDR for Photos, Wide Colour Capture for Photos and Live Photos, Advanced Red Eye Correction, Photo Geotagging, Auto Image Stabilisation, Burst Mode, Image Formats Captured: HEIF and JPEG

None of this is particularly innovative. There are plenty of other phones with three cameras on the rear. Some have more cameras than even this and others have greater telephoto reach. The Huawei P30 Pro’s telephoto camera, for instance, gives you 5x optical zoom. The Apple iPhone 11 Pro is fast, chock-full of new features and has an unbelievably good set of cameras

All iOS 13 devices have better editing tools across photos and videos, offering control sliders for sharpness, noise reduction, definition and tint. Best of all, Live Photos will remain intact after your edits, giving you one less reason to open Adobe Lightroom. But it’s the rest of the iPhone 11 Pro’s glass rear that proves ultimately persuasive, its matte finish beautifully smooth – a silky texture that feels like beach glass, ground smooth by years of tidal shift. The iPhone 11 Pro was announced on September 12, 2019 and the official release date was later that month on September 20. It sells for Pro-level pricing, although in most regions, you're going to pay the same amount as you did for the iPhone XS and iPhone X. Apple has also made a host of other improvements, to the screen, battery life, water-resistance and the performance of the phone, along with the usual extras that go along with a new version of iOS but none trumps that new camera.

Here's what we didn't like: the most obvious night mode button is at the top of the app with a fluctuating number visible, denoting long exposure time for current lightning conditions. Tap it and an intensity slider shows up along the bottom to change the exposure time. It requires enough thumb exercises that you'll be thankfully to have the smaller iPhone 11 Pro. There is a night mode button along the bottom – sometimes. It's only there when the options menu is displayed. The front-facing selfie camera has also had an upgrade, with resolution upped to 12-megapixels from only seven. Apple has also added its very own version of night mode, which I’ll get onto below. All three cameras on the rear are capable of recording 4K video at 60fps. Although he’s long-gone, Jony Ive’s influence can still be seen, hidden in the fine details. Each camera lens is framed boldly in stainless steel, seemingly perfectly positioned in space, each one equidistant from the other. And the camera bump itself is positioned in just the right place, too. Hands up: I was wrong about the iPhone 11 Pro. Or at least, the design. When I first clapped eyes on it I instinctively didn’t like the look of the thing. That trio of camera lenses looked, to my eyes, awkward – ugly even – peering like some three-eyed Harry Potter out of the rear of the phone. On the performance front, Apple's A13 Bionic chipset makes unsurprising gains, offering performance you won't find on Android phones. Every new phone is snappy in the beginning, sure, but we found video editing and exporting to be noticeably faster on the iPhone 11 Pro.

Even with the unchanged 5.8-inch screen size, the iPhone 11 Pro display has been re-worked to be brighter, and it's noticeable when viewing the phone outdoors in sunny conditions. Its maximum brightness reaches 800 nits with normal content onscreen. Arsenic Free Display, Mercury Free Display, Free of Brominated Flame Retardants, PVC Free, Beryllium Free, Recyclable Steel, Return System for Old Models Apple's minimalist camera app design means you're going to have to toggle between modes and options along the bottom of the app with a swipe up or down on the screen. It's unintuitive because you can only go one way: swipe down to display modes, and up for options. There's a tiny arrow at the top of the screen to hint at which way to swipe, but it's not very obvious. That said, if you're relying less and less on computers and want to make the iPhone 11 Pro the center of your tech world, it might not be a bad idea to jump to 512GB. This will give you room to keep the photos and videos you shoot local. You can also keep a local music library and save money by cancelling music streaming plans. Apple redesigned its iPhone camera app, surfacing options to take photos in the 16:9 aspect ratio along with 4:3 (normal) and square (formerly a dedicated mode you'd always accidentally find yourself in). This has made capturing photos for TechRadar in the 16:9 format infinitely easier without the need to crop in post. Great start.

Even with some options surfaced in the app, you can't change from 4K video to 1080p or 30fps to 60fps without exiting the camera app and diving several menus deep into the system-wide Settings menu. Why? Another nice addition here is the ability to have the camera capture images from the ultra-wide and primary cameras simultaneously. Then, if you go in and edit the photo, you can recompose and re-crop using the wider angle shot. In reality, you won’t notice much difference between this and last year’s phones in day to day use. I placed an iPhone Xs Max right next to the iPhone 11 Pro and played the same scene from Netflix’s Marco Polo and, although I could see slightly more clarity in the highlights on the iPhone 11 Pro, the difference wasn’t night and day. It’s still a wonderful display for watching high-quality movie and TV content on – the best there is, in my view – it’s just not a huge improvement. The 256GB storage capacity is available for both the Pro and non-Pro version of the iPhone, and it's probably going to be a strong option for a lot of users. Heavy iPhone 11 users may want to go with the 256GB size if they plan on storing a lot on their phone and capturing photos and videos on a daily basis.

The fact that the 18W charger and lightning-to-USB-C cable are included in the box is a big deal. Our iPhone 11 Pro went from 0% to over 50% in 30 minutes, whereas the old 5W charger, which hung around for far too long, took forever to reach this point. The iPhone 11 Pro isn't here to wow you with an incredibly different design; it looks nearly identical to the iPhone XS before it and the iPhone X before that. TrueDepth Camera - 12MP Camera, f/2.2 Aperture, Portrait Mode with Advanced Bokeh and Depth Control, Portrait Lighting with Six Effects (Natural, Studio, Contour, Stage, Stage Mono, High Key Mono), Animoji and Memoji, 4K Video Recording at 24 fps, 30 fps or 60 fps, 1080p HD Video Recording at 30 fps or 60 fps, Slow-motion Video Support for 1080p at 120 fps, Next-generation Smart HDR for Photos, Extended Dynamic Range for Video at 30 fps, Cinematic Video Stabilisation(4K, 1080p and 720p), Wide Colour Capture for Photos and Live Photos, Retina Flash, Auto Image Stabilisation, Burst Mode Extended dynamic range is incredibly impressive. In this mode, the iPhone 11 Pro’s camera captures 4K video at 120fps internally with each alternating frame shot at different exposure levels and then combined to produce a pseudo-HDR effect. It’s subtler than you might expect but it does balance out the bright and dark areas of footage in a surprisingly effective manner. One of my favourite tweaks is the ability to (at last) long-press on the Wi-Fi icon in the Control Centre menu for direct access to the Wi-Fi settings menu. You can switch between Wi-Fi networks here as well. The 512GB option is only available for the iPhone 11 Pro, and it comes at a serious hike in price from the base model. Most people won't need this much storage, and that's especially true if you plan to upgrade to the iPhone 12 in a year. All of the comparisons show a very clear advantage for the iPhone 11 Pro. The colours are more naturalistic, the details are sharper and there’s less visual noise in finely textured areas. Look at the grey rug on the shot of the chair and the wall-mounted plant pot behind it; the iPhone 11 Pro’s shot is cleaner and more detailed than the Pixel’s capture, which is spoiled somewhat by blotchiness. I found the iPhone was able to nail focus more reliably than the Pixel, too. In the photograph of the barbecue, my first attempt with the Pixel was blurry and unusable. This is typical of the whole iOS 13 upgrade, in fact. There’s nothing particularly dramatic in its list of upgrades and new features but there are quite a lot of changes that have the potential to positively impact the way you use your phone on a daily basis. While Dolby Vision and HDR10 have been supported since the iPhone X, the library of HDR content has grown in the last two years. We're also treated to Dolby Atmos sound on the iPhone 11 Pro, simulating surround sound from the stereo speakers. This is great for those rare times you're not using your AirPods.
