Michael Morpurgo, began writing stories in the early '70's, in response to the children in his class at the primary school where he taught in Kent. Michael has won the Whitbread Award, the Smarties Award, the Circle of Gold Award, the Children's Book Award and has been short-listed for the Carnegie Medal four times. I know this is just a retelling aimed at children, but some of it simply felt jarring, and bumpy to read. I think I hoped it was a novelisation of the myths, but it’s more of a retelling of several individual stories from the mythos at Arthur’s perspective several thousand years later.

The year is 1941 and Ashley leaves his father to embark on a journey from China to escape the Japanese invasion. was a 6th-century king of Dumnonia in sub-Roman Britain, who was remembered in later British tradition as a legendary King of Britain. The journey to this shore would have been along the Maiden Way, an ancient road leading south from Birdoswald to Pendragon Castle, crossing the River Eden at Appleby.

He further adds a number of other details not found in earlier sources, identifying Constantine as a son of Cador, a Cornish ruler known in Welsh tradition as Cadwy mab Geraint. As stated elsewhere, I have read a bit on these myths before and it does appear to be a mixture of different versions of the legends.

Travel to Birdoswald and you’ll see plenty of information about the Roman fort and the gatehouse that stood until the 14th Century. Some time in the 12th Century they discovered two graves in the abbey grounds which supposedly belonged to Arthur and Guinevere.
