This restoration technique caused some new artefacts, and slightly cropped visuals, so arguably the original DVD releases which used just the reverse standards converted NTSC VTs (and not the b/w film) could be considered preferable to some. I recommend the UK limited edition over the US version of this set because the packaging is nicer, it includes a booklet detailing the contents, and each disc label has different art work.

The additional scenes don’t particularly add much to the story but they are nice to have reinstalled. The 1971 season marks the beginning of the ‘UNIT family’ that would define the series for the next 4 years and change certain aspects of the show forever. to have distinctly hostile intentions – is surely as pure comic strip style as the series had ever been to that point and the underrated six-parter Colony in Space sees the Doctor and Jo travel to the unwelcoming planet Uxarius where waits another Universe-dominating plot by the Master.It’s a pity BBC Video couldn’t strike a deal with Reeltime Pictures, who did a similar thing many years featuring Jon Pertwee, Nicholas Courtney and director Christopher Barry – all sadly no longer with us.

Well as much as part of me would like to see season 25 released after 24, simply to get the awful McCoy out of the way. If it’s a clip show format when they talk about what they see on screen it’s pretty much what behind the sofa is now and as they aren’t including full episodes (based off the pertwee links) there is zero point in doing intros for something that isn’t going to get made. As beloved as Season 7 of Doctor Who is, there’s no doubting it’s a bit of a mish-mash; unlike the modern series, where a showrunner might be allowed a generous amount of time to work out how they want to present the new Doctor, Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks had less than 6 months to pull together a new Doctor, new companion, new format and the switch to colour broadcasting that was having an impact on every production within the BBC.
