About this deal

J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but while he studied classic works of the past, he was creating a set of his own. If you are looking for a good comfortable read I would rather recommend the 'regular' hardcover illustrated edition released at the same time as the deluxe version (ISBN13: 978-0008471286). If you also value the looks and have a bookshelf as centrepiece in your living room, this is a must have. In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. From Sauron's fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion. For the first time ever, a very special edition of the classic masterpiece, with the complete text and illustrated throughout by the author himself.

This new edition includes the fiftieth-anniversary fully corrected text setting and, for the first time, an extensive new index. This #TolkienReadingDay we are delighted to announce a very special new edition of Lord of the Rings, featuring artwork by Tolkien and available in two resplendent formats! The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider. Although I found some other parts of the journey fascinating, the most exhausting and gut-wrenching leg of it is my favourite. When two hobbits were crawling up Mount Doom, forced to leave more and more behind – Sam’s beloved kitchen gear and remnants of hope that they can succeed – my lips felt parched and my heart hollow. I guess, for many it might not be the most exciting part of the book, but for me, reading it felt like I’ve made that impossible climb myself. What makes a book a masterpiece? I don’t believe the criteria for this can even be measured. Our perception of art is and always will be subjective. If a book reaches a wider audience, there will always be those who love it and those who absolutely hate it.For the first time ever, a very special edition of the J.R.R. Tolkien's classic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings , gorgeously illustrated throughout in color by the author himself and with the complete text printed in two colors, plus sprayed edges and a ribbon bookmark. Sumptuous slipcased edition of Tolkien’s classic epic tale of adventure, fully illustrated in colour for the first time by the author himself. Limited to a worldwide first printing of just 6,000 copies* This deluxe volume is quarterbound in leather and includes many special features unique to this edition. The art by Tolkien has appeared in print before, most notably the hardcover "Pictures by JRR Tolkien" first published in 1979, the book itself a collection of illustrations printed in "a series of calendars" printed earlier in the 1970s.

First thing is, it's smaller than expected. This means, of course, that the illustrations are smaller than I would like, particularly given the amount of detail Tolkien puts into many of them. The quality of their reproduction makes up for it to some extent. Crisp and clear, colours good. Since it was first published in 1954, The Lord of the Rings has been a book people have treasured. Steeped in unrivalled magic and otherworldliness, its sweeping fantasy and epic adventure has touched the hearts of young and old alike. Over 150 million copies of its many editions have been sold around the world, and occasional collectors’ editions become prized and valuable items of publishing. This special 50th anniversary edition includes three volumes of The Lord of the Rings ( The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King), along with an extensive new index—a must-own tome for old and new Tolkien readers alike . Well, what can I say… Thirty years later, I “swallowed” the trilogy in about a month – and it took me so long only because I was reading it during a very busy time and could dedicate to it only short moments before bedtime. I don’t see any practical use in retelling the plot of the book read by millions. So, I’ll just share some thoughts and impressions I was left with after I finished reading. It's a good time to be a Lord of the Rings fan. The upcoming Gollum game"puts the spotlight on an unlikely hero," and looks to be another solid entry into the pantheon of Lord of the Rings games.

The 1954 edition only features two illustrations from Tolkien, but this latest Lord of the Rings illustrated version has "30 other sketches, illustrations, and maps." For me, loving this book was a surprise. I am not a fan of epic fantasy. I have my favourites in this genre, but I certainly don’t binge-read such stories. I am a true bookworm through and through. Books have been my sanctuary, my escape, my salvation, and a dozen other life-changing and life-defining things since I was a teen. During three decades of reading, I’ve read so many books, including “world classics must-reads”, that if I haven’t read some book, there is a serious reason behind why I haven’t. With “The Lord of the Rings”, this reason is that I simply didn’t feel compelled enough to read it. I did read “The Hobbit”, but eyeing its three-volume monstrosity of a sequel, I realised it’s not what I want to spend my time on. Are you as excited for these two new editions as we are? Even though the price for the Deluxe Slipcased edition will be expecteldy high, I’m not gonna lie, I will try to get it. You know what, who am I kidding, I think I will do everything to get both!
