About this deal

The Fold 3’s front cover screen also supports 120Hz, and it’s the same size as before (6.2in). The resolution has seen a very slight change, however: 2,268 x 832 compared to last year’s 2,260 x 816. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G review: UI and software Despite all of these improvements, the Z Fold 3 somehow costs slightly less than its predecessor. There’s a huge emphasis on the word “slightly”, in this instance, since it’s still the priciest handheld you can currently buy. But a saving is still a saving, no matter how small it might be. Trade-in price quoted is based on latest trade-in price list maintained with our partner (CompAsia Pte Ltd). Images captured using the Z Fold 3’s 2x zoom stretch out a bit of a lead, however. There’s plenty of detail, lots of contrast, and zoomed images looked more colourful, vivid and true to life. It’s also worth noting that, like the Galaxy S21, you can zoom digitally up to 10x magnification.

This is the Note form factor I've been waiting for since the beginning of the storied history of Samsung's pen-friendly phones. The big hook to the Galaxy Fold 3 is its slightly cheaper price compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 2 .Those who had their doubts about the first two generations of Samsung’s foldable, were right to hold ‘em, but now it may be time to fold ‘em, as this truly is one of the best Samsung phones, and will likely still remain a worthwhile machine, event when its successor, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, arrives. The camera specs mirror what we got a year ago: a 12MP f/1.8 main camera, a 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera, and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto camera that’s capable of 2x optical zoom. You’ll get optical image stabilization in the telephoto and ultra-wide cameras on this new device, but little else has changed. We've got a lot of joy out of playing games without our thumbs covering up the entire display when reaching for on-screen controls. We also showed off a YouTube video to a group of friends without having to hand over our device and without them having to squint – the Z Fold 3 screen is just that big.

While Samsung has offered phones with 1TB of storage in the past, that’s not an option here, and there’s no microSD card slot to get you any more storage beyond 512GB. Frankly, with cloud storage becoming ubiquitous, there’s little desire on the part of manufacturers to go higher than this, at least until 4K and 8K video recordings become popular. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 battery life If you can believe it, the new polyethylene terephthalate (PET) screen protectors that ship with the phone make an even bigger impact on quality than the improved outer screen. Unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 2, these protectors feel like glass and won't scratch easily. They're part of what allows the Z Fold 3 to support the S Pen, which we'll talk about in the section below. Samsung upgraded just about every one of the Z Fold 2's shortcomings on the Z Fold 3. Water resistance and a significantly better screen protector will help everyone, and a lower price makes it easier than ever for regular folks to afford one. Camera-wise, aside from the under-display selfie snapper, you’ll also be able to use a 12MP (f/1.8) rear camera, which is partnered with both a 12MP (f/2.2) ultrawide camera and a 12MP (f/2.4) telephoto unit with 2x optical zoom. The primary and zoom cameras benefit from optical image stabilisation (OIS), and the cover camera uses a single 10MP (f/2.2) sensor without OIS.We've detailed everything that's coming to the Fold 3 in the One UI 4.1 update. The foldable is getting access to Samsung's ExpertRAW app, letting you take RAW photos that you can tweak to your heart's content. If better scratch resistance and a surface you'll want to touch weren't enough, folks who enjoy using polarized glasses would be happy to know what these screens work just fine with their favorite pair of specs. Conversely, the Z Fold 2's screen would turn into a mess of rainbow colors when viewed with polarized lenses.

Rotating the display will still give you a larger video to watch and, this time around, no interruption from a punch-hole camera. That was one of my biggest annoyances with the Fold 2's larger screen. The punch-hole camera is still there but is now covered by a unique grid of pixels that's less resolution-dense than the rest of the screen. The under-display camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 impresses with its ability to disappear when you're viewing content. However, the 4MP resolution is not great for selfies. With specs like that, it’s no surprise to anyone that the Fold 3 5G’s performance is stonkingly good. With speeds sitting among the best, the Fold 3 5G’s Snapdragon 888 reached a single-core processing result of 1,127 in the Geekbench 5 test, with a score of 3,584 in multicore. Another example Samsung demonstrated during a video briefing is that while you’re watching YouTube in flex mode (with the screen partially opened at a 90-degree angle), the video plays at the top, but you can take notes in the bottom portion. This is accessed with a double tap at the bottom of the screen while the S Pen button is pressed, and can also be used during video and conference calls. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G review: Dual displays I really like the Taskbar feature, which lets you pin your favorite apps to the side of the display and follow you to any app. It's just like Windows. However, you have to dig in the Labs setting to turn this on.The Galaxy Z Fold's 3 battery life could be better. The foldable lasted under 8 hours on our web surfing test, while other flagships last 10 hours or more.

You get a top-tier Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC plus ample RAM and storage. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 also supports Samsung's S Pen ‘Fold Edition' and the new S Pen Pro. It's also now IPX8 rated for water resistance.Samsung's own apps are already optimised for multi-window use but the company has also collaborated with others including Spotify for better experiences on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The under-display selfie camera, which sits behind the phone’s inner screen, doesn’t suffer quite as badly from a washed-out-looking image as some of the others do, but the overall image quality isn’t going to blow you away, either. Taking pictures of your kids or pets can be challenging with some phone cameras — especially in low light — but I found the Fold 3 had no trouble keeping up with my son in any lighting condition. Multi-frame capture helps this significantly, and more than once, I noticed the camera would swap out the preview with another frame taken at the same time — another sign that Samsung's software has improved significantly in all the right ways. How do these cameras perform? Well, they’re very good but not the best I’ve come across. The iPhone 12 Pro’s images ever so slightly edged it in almost every side-by-side shoot-out, since the Z Fold 3’s pictures generally looked a bit too overprocessed for my liking and the iPhone managed to capture a touch more detail. There are two configurations of the Z Fold 3: 256GB with 12GB of RAM, which will be perfectly adequate for most people, and 512GB with 12GB of RAM. If you’re doing comparative phone shopping, and take into account that Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro Max starts at 128GB, that closes the price gap a little. Other S Pen-powered features include productivity boosters such as Screen Write (a markup feature), Smart Select (pull text and pictures out of other apps) and translate (where you can tap words to find out what they mean in different languages). Other features like Live Message — where you can capture an image and add text and doodles — or AR Doodle for superimposing your drawings over real-world objects are less about productivity and more about fun.
