About this deal

So an excellent front for all outings in the dark, for trekking, work, caving, camping, climbing etc. As you can see, the headlamp reaches cool 52degC and starts to reduce brightness, reaching 49degC at 10 min and stabilising at 543lm. The spot mode still has a little too much flood, but that’s due to the physical constraints of a short TIR, so for what it is, it performs above expectations. The power button feels quite solid beneath the cover, but the two on top have a little bit of a “mushy” feel. I imagine this light would appeal most to campers and backpackers that need to have their hands free, but for me, the greatest appeal is when working on cars.

In the upper part of the HC68 we find the two buttons for managing the levels and the beam (+ and -) and, on the front, the TIR Unibody optical system. In between the two main light sources you will find two small LED lights enhanced with a small red dot in the middle: these LED lights provide you with red light. For reference, here’s a baseline shot, with all the room lights off and almost nothing hitting the sensor.

and the emitter was still very slightly lit, with no flashes of either the emitter or the indicator lights behind the top buttons. Pay close attention to the differences with regards to the highest mode in the spotlight mode (above): the hotspot is less intense but the tree on the right is better highlighted. As far as I know, there is no way to make the light stay on Turbo continually, which is a little annoying. With a suitable rechargeable battery inserted, it can be charged inside the torch via the upgraded USB-C charging port. The comfortable headband is fashioned with buckles for easy adjustment to fit the smallest or largest noggins. It features a focused spot on one side and a 150° truevision floodlight with no harsh edges on the other side thanks to the precisely calculated lens curve of the ultra thin unibody TIR system that eliminates the central hotspot, which also saves on weight as well as providing a soft uniform beam. The HA23 is an Ultra Compact AA Headlamp with a max output of 250 lumens and a wide-range 150° flood beam.

When the light is off, a long press of the power button engages turbo mode which turns both the wide and narrow beam LEDs for 60 seconds. Removing the light itself from the headband was a little tough to do at first, but with repeated removals and reattachments, it’s easier to do – the loops holding the light in are tougher than I first anticipated, so they can take a bit of stretching without being damaged. It fits my big head, has a nice curved partially plastic and rubber front, and rubber strips to help maintain its position.

This makes the HC68 an ideal headlamp for camping, running, trekking, biking, or any professional work such as industrial maintenance, security, or patrol. Past that, changing the modes is a bit nebulous… The emitters do not initially seem to be matched in output, but if you go up and back down, they’ll both definitely be in ultralow (otherwise it’s really too bright to tell what’s what just by looking into the light.
