Believed to be some 400 years old, St. Mary’s stood abandoned for years until it was renovated in the 1840s. The Victorian-era church initially housed a very small congregation, but few decided to remain once the rumor mills started turning. Word in the area claimed that the church was not built in proper alignment with Jerusalem, thereby deconsecrating the soil. Another rumor held that the new church was built atop a former leper colony. Much like the Methodist Church of Gary, the Campanile cathedral’s bell tower is the only thing left behind as a memory of a thriving town which existed until 1939. The destruction of the town took place when an Italian power company decided to merge two lakes into one to supply more water to a hydroelectric power station. World War II stalled the project, but only for a limited period of time. In 1950, the company went ahead and materialised its destructive plan.
