About this deal

When Billy Wilkinson disappears in the middle of the night, his mother Claire and the rest of the family each blame themselves. Six months later and following a disastrous appeal, the family essentially begins to fall apart. Haddix provides yet another satisfying adventure for young readers with her series, The Missing. As with Shadow Children and some of her other books, she brings a delightfully fun and intriguing plot to anyone’s library. Many children are guaranteed to enjoy such a fun story such as time travel, and the added suspense of finding and rescuing the missing children is certain to entertain and thrill.

The Missing - Book Series In Order

Curtis Rathbone - CEO of Interchronological Rescue, the company that steals babies from the past and sells them in the future to become rich. He employed Gary, Hodge and Second, though he was eventually betrayed by the latter. He was known to treat his employees poorly. He was killed in Redeemed and Interchronological Rescue was shut down by the time agency. I suspect I'm going to be a lone voice with this one as many other reviewers have raved about it. I loved this author's two previous thrillers, The Accident and The Lie and had been eagerly looking forward to this latest book, but The Missing didn't engage me as much as I had hoped for and I can't put my finger on why. I liked it but I didn't love it. It's not the writing that's at fault because that is up to the usual standard and is excellent. It may be my mood at the moment, or the fact that I simply didn't care enough about the characters - I don't know. Although this wasn't one of my favourites by C L Taylor, its still a very good, suspenseful and well written story and I would recommend it to others. I think in this case its "me not you". JB is a time traveler from the future, who helps Jonah and Katherine learn the rules of time traveling. Originally, he was the son of Albert and Mileva Einstein, but his mother sent him forward in time to a later period when his mental illness could be properly treated. After reading and completing the exercises in this book, you will be able to answer the following questions and apply them to your own data: C.L. Taylor's The Accident was one of the very first books I read after starting the blog and it's almost a year since I reviewed her second novel, The Lie, after receiving a copy of the book in an incredibly inventive way (take a look here if you missed it first time round). I was very excited about reading The Missing because of how much I have enjoyed Cally's previous two books and I began the book with an expectation that it would carry on the standard of those two novels. I have read a number of novels these past two years blogging which centre around missing children, but The Missing doesn't focus on another missing infant but instead on fifteen-year-old Billy Wilkinson. Still a child, but old enough that the story can explore themes and subjects that don't feel repetitive. Billy Wilkinson went missing in the middle of the night, and his whole family carry their own guilt about what could possibly have led to his disappearance, including his mother Claire who blames herself. But, of two things she is sure and they are that Billy is still alive, and that her friends and family had nothing to do with his disappearance. Are either of those assumptions - her 'mother's instinct' - correct? Well, Cally Taylor takes the reader on a quite a journey to find out.

This book is more than just a mystery. The disappearance of Billy is a catalyst really for a character driven study into the secrets and lies in a modern family. Nowadays families aren't simple anymore, they are extended due to marriage breakdowns, step families and we now have our children live at home for much longer periods as well. Claire is a typical mum of her generation, juggling work, teenagers, parents and friendships as well as making time for a marriage to work...it's tough out there!! As a mum who has been through those teenage years, I understood totally where Claire was coming from. Trying to develop that balance of guiding and disciplining your child but starting to let go and just hope you have done your best to raise a good adult. JB ( Tete Einstein) - A time traveler from the future who helps Jonah and Katherine restore time. He knows the rules of time traveling and guides Jonah and Katherine in many of their journeys. He is the son of Albert Einstein and brother to Emily Quinn (Lieserl Einstein). He was sent forward in time by his mother, Mileva Einstein, to a point in time when his mental illness could be cured so that he could live a normal life. He then grew up to become the time traveler Jonah and Katherine know as "JB". The translations were first published, under this title, by an unknown editor in The Lost Books of the Bible Cleveland 1926, but the translations had previously been published many times.

The story doesn't so much focus on the official investigation of Billy's disappearance but more on the effect it has on the family and how they are desperate for answers.

Charles Haddingford "Chip" Winston III ( King Edward V) - Jonah's friend and Alex's older brother. One of the missing children of history, Chip and Alex are particularly famous for their disappearance. Both boys' pasts were restored in Sent. He becomes Katherine's boyfriend after their adventures in Sent. In a lot of missing person cases suspicion eventually falls onto the family members themselves and that's pretty much how I went into this story from the off. I began reading and immediately tried to distance myself from some of the characters because I didn't know whether or not to trust them, especially as we learn more about their actions leading up to Billy's disappearance, and even more so with some of their behaviour in the present day. Whilst Cally creates a very believable picture of a family struggling to cope with the disappearance of someone they love, there's still that undercurrent of mystery and suspense the whole way through the novel and so that's why I continued to be wary of each and every character. The book is, essentially, a combined reprint of earlier works. The first half, Lost Books of the Bible, is an unimproved reprint of a book published by William Hone in 1820, titled The Apocryphal New Testament, itself a reprint of a translation of the Apostolic Fathers done in 1693 by William Wake, who later became the Archbishop of Canterbury, and a smattering of medieval embellishments on the New Testament, from a book by Jeremiah Jones (1693–1724), posthumously published in 1736. In the three centuries since these were originally published, a great deal more is known about the Apostolic Fathers (including a good deal of the original text that was not available in 1693) and New Testament apocrypha.Haddix originally intended the series to consist of only seven books. However, she stated that she had trouble closing out the series in seven books; leading to her decision to write Redeemed. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate.
