About this deal

This book is a classic. The modern, flashy books written by historians today are well-written and well-researched, but there is no good substitute for the real thing-- and this book is it. I wish Ernie Pyle had survived the war, but he left behind a wonderful collection of stories that people like me can enjoy today. They beat Oval Invincibles comfortably in their last group match to finish five points clear of them, only to fluff their lines against the same opponents on the big day. James Vince raced to 20 from nine balls in Brave's reply before he was dismissed by a brilliant caught and bowled by Sean Abbott. An excellent compilation of newspaper columns written by WWII war correspondent Ernie Pyle from the fighting in Europe and published in 1944. Pyle was killed the following year on Iwo Jima, but he was especially popular for his intimate style of reporting that focused on the perspective of soldiers instead of the generals. Pyle "was a Pulitzer Prize–winning American journalist and war correspondent who is best known for his stories about ordinary American soldiers during World War II." He was a famous reporter then. He was killed by enemy fire in the Okinawa campaign in April 1945. Per the review that follows, "As a combat reporter, Pyle surpassed all others working during the Second World War...."

My strength was coming on and hoping to take on the spinners. But when I saw the amount of spin coming, based on the amount of balls remaining I said to the skipper they must have at least 20 balls of pace left. Southern Brave bowler Tymal Mills on BBC Two: I don't like to shout about it [his birthday] but it was a nice day and a nice present. One could not help but be moved by the colossus of our invasion. It was a bold and might thing, one of the epics of all history. In the emergency of war our nation’s powers are unbelievable . . . . But we rise above our normal powers only in times of destruction." Along with all those who fought or resisted Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, the American soldiers who served in the Second World War helped preserve for us a world in which human decency and liberty are possible. In “Brave Men,” Ernie Pyle, a war correspondent embedded with our forces in North Africa, Italy and France, helps us understand, eighty years on, what they did and endured. An account of the war can serve no higher purpose than to inspire our abiding gratitude to those soldiers, and in this “Brave Men” succeeds magnificently. Will Smeed hit the first century of The Hundred as Birmingham Phoenix produced a fine all-round display to defeat reigning champions Southern Brave at Edgbaston.Update 7/15/23. Starts out compulsively readable, but the daily combat reports get grim in a hurry. Book of its time. I'm not at all sure I will finish it. . . Brave Men" sees war correspondent and infantry everyman Pyle follow the American army through Italy and into France. The reader sees the invasions of both Anzio and Normandy through Pyle's signature tight but descriptive prose. The book includes perhaps Pyle's most famous essay, "The Death of Captain Waskow," written in December 1943. It also includes his observations of the D-Day invasion as well as a horrific account of the Operation Cobra bombings that killed 111 soldiers in friendly fire bombings. Both Brave's men and women had four wins from four matches at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton last year and will go a long way to more success if they replicate that formidable record. After left-hander Holden skied the pace of Tymal Mills to fall for 31, Originals slowed slightly, going eight balls without a boundary before Buttler resumed his assault with a mighty blow for six off the leg-spin of Rehan Ahmed. Both finals are live on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer from 14:00 BST on Sunday. Brilliant Buttler puts on a show

Manchester Originals opener Phil Salt to Sky Sports: "Sometimes [going hard at the beginning] it's going to be a hit and miss role. My job is to take pressure off Jos, when he bats through, he was not far off finishing the game all by himself. We're going nicely at the moment. Everything war can be, the merciless sorrow of it all, is there in McCullin’s dark, arresting aesthetic – both in his reflective prose and his pin-sharp photographs. McCullin is well-known, of course, for his images, but his words in the book vibrate with an equal power, in my opinion. They are those of a man trying to comprehend what he saw and what he will never be able to unsee. It was a good throw and a good catch. She caught it like an outfielder. But no sooner did she have it in her arms than the crowd was upon her. Kids and adults both tore at the box, scratched and yelled and grabbed, and in five seconds the box was empty and torn. What’s more, The Ageas Bowl also hosts The Hundred Eliminator on Friday 2 nd September. The Eliminator will be another huge double-header with the teams finishing second and third in both the men’s and women’s group stages facing off for a spot in The Hundred Final. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in WWII and/or had family members that served. You can't get much better than this first person account, primary source of the war. Ernie Pyle details the lives of everyday men, and the occasional woman, who served overseas in the Sicilian and Italian campaigns, in England, and in the beginnings of the Normandy battles. I’ve read several WW II history books. Brave Men is more than a history book; it was written as history was being made. It’s journalism – and an entirely different read. This book is a collection of the dispatches Pyle sent for publication in US newspapers. As a war correspondent, Pyle reported the war through the eyes of the men on the front lines.

And let's face it, those are darn compelling subjects. Pyle relates their experiences using plain language and straightforward prose. But there is nothing simplistic about his understanding and empathy for the fighters, and I found that the spareness of his prose very often elevated the writing to the level of some of the master stylists, especially Ernest Hemingway. Consider this excerpt, near the end of the book, which describes Pyle and a group of soldiers sent to the front line to retrieve two disabled tanks. They arrive as darkness falls. They're very near the fighting, but they can't tell for certain how near. Pyle writes: By the time Buttler miscued Chris Jordan, Originals were left needing only 17 from 12 deliveries. The experienced Laurie Evans took them to the brink before Jamie Overton, Craig's twin, hit Jordan for six over long-off to seal a hugely impressive victory. Not Brave enough Ernie Pyle was a war correspondent during WWII, traveling with the American invasion forces. This book is a collection of his news columns dating from June 1943 to September 1944. It provides a vivid sense of what life was like for the troops, covering such events as the naval crossing to Sicily, fighting at Anzio, the Italian campaign, a stint in England waiting for D-Day, the invasion at Normandy, and the liberation of Paris. Match Hero Andre Russell speaking to Sky Sports: "This is my fifth game and I've been feeling confident with the bat, but the runs weren't coming. But I kept believing and today I did what I do best. I'm happy with the win, hopefully we keep the momentum going. Originals completed the highest chase in Hundred history with four deliveries to spare and will meet Oval Invincibles in Sunday's final at Lord's.The other aspect I found interesting was the adaptability of all levels of American society to the differing requirements of war. Remember that this, unlike today, was not a volunteer army, but one chosen from all ranks of society. For example, there were men recruited from the mid-west who successfully went into the navy and were piloting small boats. Anya Shrubsole may have retired from England duty but the pace bowler, who has a lethal inswinger, still has plenty to give. Ernie Pyle primarily focuses on the normal “little guy”. There is a brief interview with Omar Bradley.
