About this deal

The first time I read this I liked it a lot, the second time around was even better because I loved it more. I'll never get tired of reading about Danny and the sweetheart that is Wyn. šŸ’—šŸ’— Now I would definitely say this receives 5* for the performance but unfortunately only 2* for the production. I was initially thrown by the voice given to the main characters but that is more because I've read it on Kindle at least twice before and had developed an internal voice for the characters myself. That said, the performance was brilliantly done and the narrator definitely has the flexibility needed for this series going forward. This is so dangerous. The military is lurking. Vicious monsters are lurking. And when Mary turns out to be even worse than we could have ever imagined, my desperate bid to save this monster turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse.

There is only one human who isnā€™t afraid of me. The only one who matters. And I will destroy anyone who tries to hurt him or take him from me. Danny is mine. I'm thinking that this may be my first foray into this particular genre. I actually have no preconceived notions of ANY genre before jumping in - basically, I just like to read good stories. Unfortunately, I had a hard time with this one - and honestly, not because of anything you might think. My whole life has felt like I was just kind of drifting. No purpose. No aim. But nowā€¦ This feels like where Iā€™m meant to be. This feels right.ā€ Wyn isn't human, but he is humanoid, and Danny finds himself very attracted to him, even without getting to see his face, as Wyn keeps a hood on around Danny at all times. I'm not very good with extreme graphic violence, but while some parts here are rather grim and gory, I did not find them overdone or so horrifying that I'd felt the need to hide under a blanket. šŸ˜

I like this thread, is what Iā€™m saying. Every book has a theme (and if someone tells you romance doesnā€™t, theyā€™re wrong, because every romance book asks us what it means to be loved or to love), and this one weaves through the series and leaves it stronger for it. Iā€™ve been out here for a long time, and the fear that courses through my blood every time I have to step outside our camp walls to scavenge never fades. No matter how many monsters you faceā€”and have to run for your life fromā€”it doesnā€™t ever get easier. But as they start a physical relationship, they get closer and closer emotionally too, and as they go on their journey, fall more and more in love. the way their relationship progressed was so lovely to witness. they just felt like straight up soulmates to me.

Again with the Choth comparisons, but I was pretty sure Charlie topped all in gentle caretaking and being supportive and loving for his monster. Until Seraph. The way Lilac stayed by Seraph no matter what happened - in the snow, uphill both ways - it was almost a caricature but I felt his emotion so much. Seraph was his and he wanted to protect him, no matter what. Life as a raider in the Wastes, where monsters roam and the military lurks, is as easy as it sounds.

The other options are being a nomad of sorts, or part of a group that travels through the "Wastes" as the land in the US is now called, or joining the Military. And soon they all evacuated every part of the US that wasn't near water - the monsters didn't get through the tears there and generally don't go there either, so the "normal" population has been reduced to extreme overcrowding in all the costal cities and land, where there is extreme poverty for about 99% of people who live there.

I was so excited to see this series finally become available as an audiobook. It is probably in my top 3 series of all time. For the first time in my unfathomably long life, I know what it means to want another so much that the thought of losing him threatens to ruin me. I will do anything to keep Danny with me for as long as I can have himā€”for as long as he is willing to stay by the side of an ancient, scarred creature with a voice so inhuman it has sent some mad.there wasn't much going on, plot-wise, bc we basically just followed wyn and danny (sometimes edin, wyn's friend) through different places while wyn would continue his task but i simply adored every interaction wyn and danny hadā€”even if they weren't doing anything at allā€”that i still enjoyed this book, regardless. it did have a lot of telling > showing, which i'm personally not a fan of, and the ending felt abrupt that i literally thought, "that's it??" but, overall, i'm glad i finally decided to give this series a chance! can't wait to read the other books bc i already love this world lily mayne has created. šŸ˜Œ Hurt/comfort (not for those with weak stomachs, but the book is set in a cruel dystopia after all). He reminded me of Wesley from The Princess Bride, I wouldnā€™t have been surprised if he uttered those words; as you wish. Ok so the Monstrous series is one of my faves. Lily Mayne has created some fantastic characters, highly recommend the entire series. Danny and Wyn are probably my favorite couple too.
