About this deal

Headmistresses Miss Belle and Miss Best ("the Beauty and the Beast") explain that "We never punish anyone, Elizabeth. There is a little respite when she is allowed to practice a piano-duet with one of the big boys whose name is Richard Watson even though her actual piano tutoring has been denied her whilst she is in disgrace. Elizabeth Allen, older and no longer having a spoiled personality, goes on to her second term at Whyteleafe School. I know exactly what you mean about the flow of Enid's dialogue, Anita, and somehow the latter passage (with edits) just isn't as relaxing and as carefree as the first one is to read. Because Elizabeth is becoming so spoilt and naughty it's felt that going away to school will be good for her and perhaps rub off a few of her corners but she would have to leave her pony and her dog behind and go far away to live with strange girls and boys so Elizabeth is dead against the idea.

Much more worrying is the extent to which significant chunks of text have been altered for the 2010 edition. Little changes in the later books have been made to accommodate the more recent fans of the author's offerings so instead of Elizabeth parting with six shillings, two half-crowns and five sixpences (that's thirteen shillings and sixpence), the sum has been changed to 70p.

Comerscroft:] In Primary 1, my brother and his pals could expect the blackboard rubber across their bottoms. If you do someone a wrong you might be threatened with The Meeting, but it's not only bad behaviour such as bullying, unkindness, untruthfulness and disobedience that is addressed at these gatherings. Although un-credited, the art in that book looks like Rene Cloke's work and in the original edition which was illustrated by W. People like the way you look, the way you smile, and your pretty clothes, so they fuss you, and pet you, and spoil you, instead of treating you like an ordinary child, But it isn't enough to have a pretty face and a merry smile — you must have a good heart too.

Yet another meeting is held and as always, it's interesting to see what moans and groans have accumulated over the week. All the schools that I attended would also use various different methods of chastisement, we all accepted it as being perfectly normal. It's interesting that the Famous Five books are renowned for the sumptuous food the Five regularly eat, so you might think (if you weren't familiar with the books) that surely the Five must be eating really fine food - of the elaborate sort found in expensive restaurants, or featured in some of the television cooking shows. The main character is Elizabeth Allen, a very spoiled girl whose misbehaviour causes her governesses to leave. Elizabeth Allen is only one of the naughty girls around whom the author liked to weave tales and the she reflected her preference for naughtiness through another Elizabeth — Elizabeth Hilton, who once endured a story entitled The Little Saint. We should try and avoid, however, making judgements of people who lived years ago based on our current mores. I can distinctly remember some kids being smacked with a rolled up wodge of papers at primary school and I left in 1990! I often find myself salivating while reading about the large variety of food-stuffs the Five consume throughout the 21 books (who doesn't? he also plays a duet with Elizabeth at the end of term concert and whispers to Elizabeth "you're a good sort! After that, Hanly and Enid had no contact for about seventeen years until, in 1967, Enid phoned her brother when she herself was ill.

There may be a few things there that are considered fattening now, and the "food police" may well tell us we must eat them only occasionally, or even not at all (some regard any type of sugar as total poison that must be completely avoided). I then went home and then looked up all the telephone numbers of all the Blytons in Sheffield in the phone book. Her books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated into more languages more often than any other children’s author. There's another article in Journal Five by Carey Blyton, I'll try and dig my copy out and see if there's any relevant info in there. Not only is Whyteleafe co-educational, but discipline and decision-making are in the hands of the pupils.
