Twelve: A twelve-year-old genius capable of explaining the Troop's mechanisms and other ponderous philosophies in plain language. Truddi M. Chase: Guest Book". The Washington Post. March 16, 2010. Archived from the original on October 11, 2021 . Retrieved January 24, 2023– via Legacy.com. Despite the horrific occurrences at its foundation, the book was an engaging read. The elements of foreshadowing and suspense did keep me reading although they felt clunky at times. Some of the leaps in understanding that Stanley made still elude me - I suppose I don't grasp D.I.D. enough. So, Truddi Chase survives a horrific childhood. She develops 92 personalities as a way of dealing with both the terrible things that happens to her and the subsequent memories that they leave behind-- each personality is responsible for a different set of memories, so the whole thing doesn't have to hurt or overwhelm her at once. The person known as "Truddi" is basically an empty shell that the personalities use to make themselves known. Among the Troops, Catherine, who's sophisticated, glamorous, and accomplished, but also unhealthily perfectionistic and simmering with repressed rage.

Many of these children are dead. The woman experiences either their "essence" which goes on after they die, or their mirror-images. Astraea wrote: "sometimes these victims ARE NO LONGER INDIVIDUALS; even within their own world/mind. Badass and Child Duo: Mean Joe and Lambchop. Joe watches over all the children with tender, loving care. Wolk, Douglas (August 21, 2014). "Review: 'Doom Patrol Omnibus' shows Grant Morrison's master plan". Los Angeles Times. Archived from the original on August 22, 2014 . Retrieved January 22, 2023. I found this book alternatively fascinating, unbelievable, horrifying and silly. I had heard elsewhere that there has been some speculation that the book is not legitimate but in fact is fabricated. When the story line became a little too weird (as in parts about reading minds and paranormal stuff) then that speculation kept running through my mind and I became a very cynical reader.Sixteen: A manifestation of adolescent sexuality, created to deal with normal sexual feelings in an appropriate manner. She also looks out for the other children. Grace the Zombie: She appears when the system is overwhelmed; she is perpetually calm to the point of appearing zombie-like. Her name Grace is from "grace under pressure". The Woman With 92 Personalities". Oprah.com. May 21, 1990. p.7. Archived from the original on October 9, 2010 . Retrieved August 10, 2019.

Finally, I want to accept the phenomenon of multiples, or D.I.D. as it is now known. And I want to believe that people would not undertake deception in the name of mental health and understanding. But contrary to the purported intention, this book made a skeptic out of me. I believe in the vast capabilities of the mind, and is psychic abilities and in a state of transcendant spirituality. But I didn't believe any of that was truly at work here. Eye Color Change: Frequently occurs with changes in who's using the body. The selves make the body look taller or shorter, have a slightly rounder or thinner face, etc. depending on their posture and muscle tension/relaxation. You can see this in films of their television appearances. This doesn't always work. Truddi Chase, for one, had no "first born" as that personality had been kept asleep by the others since childhood because her protectors didn't feel she was capable of handling the world. I know at least one other DID patient like that, an artist in England. The book When Rabbit Howls was published in 1986 and was not well received by the press, but was welcomed by victims of child abuse and people with multiple personalities, who found in the Troops' narrative validation of their own experiences. For some reason, though, I didn't want to look up Truddi Chase until after I finished the book. I guess I needed to come to terms with the story on my own, which was difficult, because it really read like a science-fiction novel, just like Dr. Phillips warns in the intro. Some of the 92 Troops live permanently in the shadows and never come forth. Some are dead and rely on other Troops to carry their memories. Some manifest in therapy but never give their names as a way of keeping themselves safe. Unable to Cry: Several Troop members can't cry. Catherine is one of them, although she sometimes experiences tears in her eyes when she's writing about the past.
