He is cunning and manipulative and has a very good (but cynical) understanding of how the world works. Late in the novel, he guiltily admits that he accidentally ate one of the intelligent rats of the Clan early in their history, and thus became sentient himself.

Maher, Kevin (29 June 2023). "The Amazing Maurice review — meta gags ruin rat caper". The Times. ISSN 0140-0460 . Retrieved 30 June 2023. I'M SURPRISED AT YOU, MAURICE. OF COURSE THERE ARE NO CAT GODS. THAT WOULD BE TOO MUCH LIKE . . . WORK." The book opens with Amazing Maurice (a sentient cat), a group of talking rats (the Clan), and the human boy Keith travelling in a mail coach to a small town called Bad Blintz. The group plans to enact a scheme they have used many times before, where in the rats pretend to infest the town and Keith poses as a rat piper to lead the "vermin" away for a small sum of cash. Although Maurice sees nothing wrong with this hustling business, the rats find it immoral, and convince Maurice that this town will be the last one they rob. Upon arriving in town, the group discovers that the people are convinced of a massive rat infestation, and have spent much of their savings on two rat catchers. Despite their efforts, food continues to disappear from the town. As the rats move into the town's underground, they discover an overwhelmingly large number of rat traps, but no live keekees (rats who cannot talk or think). Aboveground, Maurice makes similar observations, including that many of the rat tails the rat catchers display as proof of their successful hunting are in fact shoelaces. Maurice and Keith meet the mayor's daughter Malicia and introduce her to the talking rats. The film suggests Maurice thought differently about rats when he was given the intelligence to understand more. Have you ever changed your mind about an issue, person, or group of people, based on learning more about them? It's a good read. Smart. Funny. And pleasantly stand-alone. It's easy to see why he won the Carnegie award for it.

Synopsis

everybody wants to be a cat... παραραμ!!! καλά, μπορεί να θέλει να γίνει και ένα εξελιγμένο τρωκτικό βέβαια...) Talking rats and one very special talking cat and a stupid-looking boy con their way through Discworld. What more could anyone want? Villains, pied pipers, rats in human skin? Ah! But this is Pratchett and we've got all that and sausages that don't deserve the name sausage. The film tells the tale of Maurice, a large talking cat, who travels from town to town offering to solve their sudden rat problem. He unveils Keith, a young boy who can play the pipe quite well, and the rats march out of town to the relief of the townsfolk. Maurice and the money received from the grateful town suddenly disappear and he reappears a suitable distance away to count the money with Keith and the rats! But these are no ordinary rats – they talk and wear clothes and dream of an island paradise where rats and humans live together in peace. All goes well with their ‘rat scam’ until they reach the town of Bad Blintz, where they meet a book-obsessed girl, Malicia, who leads them on an adventure to solve the mystery of her town. My father shouted a lot and sent for Blunkett and Spears, too,’ said Malicia. ‘They’re the rat-catchers! And you know what that means, don’t you?’

This article is about the film. For the novel the film was based on, see The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents. Maurice is a madly inventive retelling of The Pied Piper, featuring ragged-eared, fast-talking tomcat Maurice as the brains of the outfit. His cronies the rats can talk too, thanks to their hazardous-magical-waste diet amid the trash-heaps behind Unseen University. In Dec. of 2007, Pratchett disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. On 18 Feb, 2009, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. This animated family film is produced with Narrativia, the independent production company set up by the author in 2012 and is a co-production between Cantilever Media and Ulysses Filmproduktion for Sky Cinema.

Dangerous Beans – an albino rat who has acted as a kind of spiritual leader for the Clan since they became intelligent after eating rubbish from behind Unseen University. Darktan observes that Dangerous Beans is the Clan's much-needed philosopher, finding and "disarming" dangerous ideas for the group. For example, Dangerous Beans is the one who they all turn to for answers to questions of rat cannibalism, stealing, and the phenomenon of dreaming. He is also the interpreter of the rats' "bible", a children's book called Mr. Bunnsy Has An Adventure, which depicts rats and other animals living in harmony with humans, speaking and dressing like them. When Malicia observes that this book's utopian society is entirely fictional, Dangerous Beans and his assistant Peaches run off in despair. Some name-calling, such as a character being referred to as "useless" and "too ugly to be a love interest." Otherwise language is very tame and aimed at younger viewers, such as "widdle." She crouched down and peered into the hole. ‘There’s a sort of little lever,’ she said. ‘I’ll just give it a little push …’ They discover a great deal of food stolen by the men and large cages when the local keekees are being bred for coursing.

First of all, if there was a film this reminded me of it would be the 1995 Chris Noonan film Babe. In this very good movie, a young piglet confronts the contrast and distinction of animals as pets and being loved as a part of the family while also being food. Maurice watched them argue again. Humans, eh? Think they’re lords of creation. Not like us cats. We know we are. Ever see a cat feed a human? Case proven. Then they arrive in Bad Blintz, which is suffering from a plague of rats, and find there are NO rats anywhere (though the two resident rat catchers seem to have plenty of tails to show, at 50 pence per tail).

This is only my second read of this story since soon after its publication, and I had considered it a lesser work from the author. Not since The Light Fantastic has a reread changed my opinion of a Discworld book more. I loved everything about these books, from the power of leadership, to the idea of a philosopher rat going ahead of his fellows to disarm ideas like other rats would disarm traps, to the boy Keith and his absolute acceptance that the talking rats and cat are just a different sort of people. Even the idea of a rat utopia that is floated at the start of the book is examined and rejected for a much better reality.

Terry Pratchett’s Discworld arrangement has topped British smash hit records for a considerable length of time and has a sizable fanbase in the United States too. Presently with “The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents” Pratchett extends Discworld from grown-up dream to youthful grown-up dream too. This is a film with a lot of charm, and gives cinema its most lovable rats since Ratatouille. But I did wonder at points who the audience is. Little ’uns may be puzzled by the sophisticated wordplay – in particular the meta commentary of Emilia Clarke’s character Malicia, the clever clogs bookworm daughter of the mayor of Furry Bottom, as she pokes fun at plot cliches. It's right up there with the rather refreshing and literal British term I grew up with, of going to the "loo," to which American's refer rather politely, and somewhat ambiguously, as a visit to the restroom.
