About this deal

Shortly after the motorized AT-AT Walker set from 2007 was retired in 2010, the LEGO community received a new regular version. It came cheaper than the previous model which is always rare for a re-designed set but it also has around 200 fewer parts. Compared to the original 2003 version, it does not stand even close in terms of authenticity. Unusually, those heads differ when the helmets are removed. The classic Clone Trooper designs have been replaced with generic components, returning from other characters but suiting these minifigures. The smirking face is particularly interesting as that only otherwise appears on Tom Riddle from Harry Potter Magical Treasury: A Visual Guide to the Wizarding World. The set includes six minifigures with equipment: Luke Skywalker with a blue lightsaber, General Veers with binoculars, two AT-AT drivers with blasters and two Snowtroopers in white camouflage clothing. In the same way, as in the movie, key battle scenes can be re-enacted or new missions can be created. For example, Luke has a winch to pull himself up to the AT-AT's hull. In the belly is a fold-out floor hatch that young Skywalker can open to drop a thermal detonator into the AT-AT's interior. Playable Interior and Design Details This version of the AT-AT Walker does not reinvent the build method for the vehicle. Instead, it adapts and improves a design that has worked well several times before. The basic shape of the All-Terrain Armoured Transport has been captured so well in the past that it would be ludicrous to try some completely new structural method at this point. The design really has been elevated this time around, though, with even some small improvements offering a much-enhanced model.

I was a proud owner of 4483 from day one but exchanged it against 75054 when that came out. I still like 75054 a lot and I'm not going to exchange it against this, even if this seems to be superior. It's only slightly superior, I think. Not such a big step up.

Another opening hatch is situated towards the front and houses a Technic gear. Turning this gear deploys a string from underneath the AT-AT, forming Luke Skywalker's ascension cable. The cable has appeared with every previous model, although it has never been able to move. Once again, the designer has found use for almost every available space! For this set to be motorized, it meant a few positive and negative features. Of course, you got one of the most iconic Imperial vehicles in a motorized version. However, this feature meant a much less detailed exterior. The interior undoubtedly remains cramped and placing the minifigures inside can sometimes prove challenging. Nevertheless, this internal configuration represents an improvement upon earlier models and I am particularly pleased that the designer has still found enough room to incorporate basic controls which surround the minifigures. With a higher piece count and the additional inflation of prices we see nowadays, this set came at a significantly higher price point than that of the 2014 AT-AT Walker although the sizes are pretty much the same. In terms of minifigures, I would say the selection is great but not large enough. Expensive sets of this magnitude should include more characters. A clear example of how the main body has been improved is in the additional sloped panels on this version – rather than just feeling like a box, subtle shifts in the shaping accurately reflect the way the movie prop looks on-screen. There’s also a little more texturing than we’ve seen before thanks to grille tiles and recessed sections, which really gives the model the mechanical feel it demands.

With a model like this, which has four skinny legs, you always worry about stability. While the Lego AT-AT is actually pretty stable, you do need to make sure you don’t adjust the legs too far, or you may find your model toppling sideways. We tested this one, on a hard floor, and actually didn’t break the AT-AT too much – a few pieces of armor, foot, and leg came away, but it was easily fixed. Should you buy the Lego Star Wars AT-AT?

This Luke Skywalker minifigure was introduced last year and is the best version in his flight suit yet – unfortunately not for Hoth though, as this is his X-wing outfit rather than his Snowspeeder outfit. — Price —
