About this deal

Personalities aside, though, Arboretum is delightfully tense. I appreciate games in which every decision feels important, but no one decision feels like the entire game hinges upon it. There is enough wiggle room in this game that it needn’t be so stressful, but the game makes its weight known for half an hour. I like that. Note 1: It is possible to gain the right to score points for a species that is not present in your arboretum. In this case, you will not score anything for that species, but you may have prevented an opponent from scoring points for that species. Many tree collections have been claimed as the first modern arboretum, with the term applied retrospectively as it probably did not come into use even orally until the later eighteenth century, or later. Probably the most important early proponent of the arboretum in the English-speaking transatlantic world was the prolific landscape gardener and writer, John Claudius Loudon (1783–1843) who undertook many gardening commissions and published the Gardener's Magazine, Encyclopaedia of Gardening and other major works. Loudon's Arboretum et Fruticetum Britannicum, 8 vols., (1838) is probably the most significant work on the subject in British history and included an account of all trees and shrubs that were hardy in the British climate, an international history of arboriculture, an assessment of the cultural, economic and industrial value of trees and four volumes of plates. Score 1 additional point for each card in the path if the path is at least 4 cards long and all cards in the path are of the same species.

Arboretum is a game about minimizing your opponents score as much as it's about generating a score for yourself. You can get one point through the positive action of planting a tree, or if you save the right card you can remove 5 from your opponent. It splits your brain into Ying and Yang as you need to figure out the best move for yourself, and also how best to screw over your opponent. At the end of this 8-player game, the players have the following sums in hand (individual card values indicated in parentheses): Still, I rate Arboretum. It's filled to the brim with tough choices, and I was engaged from start to finish with puzzling out what I needed to keep, what I could safely get rid of, and what position would provide maximum comfort on the couch tonight. As much as I enjoyed these crunchy decisions, it's a game I'd rather play at a convention, or online, where I can dehumanize the opponent and allow myself to be mean. Otherwise, I have too much of a conscience to play with friends and family. The game was a hit with the family, drawing in children and parents alike. The age recommendation (8+) is spot on, though I tend to think the strategic choices will be difficult for anyone under the age of ten. The timing on the box is accurate. A four-player game may stretch past 30 minutes if anyone is prone to paralysis, but a 25-minute play is also not out of the question if folks are on the ball. Add a tree to the Arboretum (after the first turn, all trees must be placed orthogonally adjacent to another tree in the Arboretum). The game also enjoys the excitement and dread of the slow reveal. As you get closer to the end game players slowly realise what cards other players must have. As a result, they understand whether they are going to score any points for their meticulously designed row of willows. Also, if a player has the number one left in their hand, and another player has the eight, that eight is suddenly worth zero in the end game totalling. Lindsay Pryor National Arboretum" (PDF).
