About this deal

I couldn’t work out the solution to the mystery for most of the book, even at that I only deduced part of it! I’m not slipping, it’s just a particularly good mystery! 😅 A lot of thriller writers in recent years seem to be fans of the slow burn approach and often that can leave a reader underwhelmed. The opening section of Hide and Seek immediately grabs hold of you, slaps you in the face and leaves you cast aside agonising over what's to come.

Set in a leafy suburb in Dublin, Lily Murphy disappears in 1985 while playing the age-old favourite children’s game of hide and seek. Many years later, a new family has moved the house once occupied by the Murphy family. When Joanna realises that Lily once lived there, she is immediately overcome with an awful sense of dread that she just can’t shift. She thinks she knows that happened to the little girl and if the truth comes out, her world will also be turned upside down. Secondly, when we find out why they are really there...ugh, I just rolled my eyes and plowed through to the end to see if things would be redeemed, but unfortunately they really weren't.The corpse at the centre of the murder inquiry is that of a down and out young junkie, living -- and dying -- in utter squalor. however, despite my apprehension about its supernatural foes and societal woes, i was completely won over. the social commentary wasn't too heavy-handed and was well-integrated into the architecture of the story, and the beastie proved just as good as a human adversary at satisfying my bloodthirsty little readersoul. it helped that—precision be damned—i just pictured the red bull from The Last Unicorn. Years later, Joanna moves into a new house. It seems perfect in every way, until she learns that this was once Lily Murphy's home. From that moment onwards, a sense of dread seems to follow her from room to room.

Fast forward to 2018 and Joanna Stedman and her family move into their forever home. It seems perfect - until Joanna discovers that it was once the home of Lily Murphy. As Joanna delves further into the child’s disappearance, revelations and secrets emerge - including Joanna’s own. Does she play a part in this long forgotten mystery? Thank you to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Del Rey and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.Overall this worked for me, and I had a good time reading it, despite its flaws. I'd definitely read another horror novel from this author in the future! Maggie is accused of killing Will (the same way she killed her first husband). But for more than 75% of the book we mostly read the biographies of Maggie and Will. The last one forth of the story focuses of the trial and this part I finally found interesting. I totally admit to skipping through some biographical parts but this final suspense (centred around the questions: what really happened? did Maggie kill Will?) is what I quite enjoy. In fact I like it enough to consider rising my notes up to 3 stars. I wish the whole book is like that, I wish the actual suspense part is much more developed. Here we've got interesting but still a biography of miserable life of fictional singer mostly presented by herself. The suspense is unfortunately only a minor part of the book. I found myself on the edge of my seat with Joanna’s anxiety and her fear about being responsible for Lily’s death. She appears to be a good person, but as her lies surface, I found myself curious about what she was hiding. This poor woman had such a bad start in life I understand why she chose to rather lie about her past – I might have done the same. She gained my respect when she decided not to destroy lives with a truth best left unknown. However, my irrational fears aside, no one does thrillers quite as well as Andrea Mara. I've loved all her other books (some only slightly more than others) so when I got an advance copy from Netgalley I started reading straight away.

As Joanna unravels the secrets at the heart of this close-knit community, her own dark past begins to resurface. Because she thinks she knows what really happened to Lily - and if the truth gets out, it might be her undoing...” ARC provided by NetGalley / Cópia antecipada do livro proporcionada pelo NetGalley (review in portuguese and english).

let us leave unexamined what it says about me that i use competitive murder books as escapist entertainment. suffice it to say, i ride the subway into the city every day, which gives me a front-row seat to the decline of civilization along with some simmering fantasies about thinning out the human herd.
