About this deal

The book starts with Saba Minhas leaving home for the first time at 18 and staying at the AWWA (Army Wives Welfare Association) hostel, Calcutta. Unlike most other young women of that age who are assured and know what they want, Saba has lost her way due to a trauma in her past, and unsure about herself. Through the story, she navigates the vagaries of hostel life, quirky and sometimes downright nasty hostel hostel mates, her dreams versus her parents' expectations. There are also possible romantic options: Kabir who likes her and treats her like a gentleman; Faraaz who seems a perfect match, and Adil who is an enigma, but makes her experience that mystery called chemistry! Saba, excited about her recently amassed branches of freedom. Resolving in the army hostel, a new life, new challenges also a new journey of university life, new friendships.

There are not many novels which are both plot and character driven and this certainly stands out on that front. The narration is impeccable and every reader can feel everything happening in front of his own eyes as author has incorporated a very visual way of writing. The tale makes you nostalgic and yearning for more once one reaches the fag end. Reading this book was akin to having an animated conversation with a girl best friend. This romantic comedy has not fallen prey to clichés. Its script flow is inviting, the pauses accurate, the choice of words for expressions of a teenager going through the vagaries of hostel life, friends-turned-foes-turned-real-people, and too many suitors in love is amazing! The prose is peppy and buoyant, so much so that the reader cannot help but enjoy Saba's antics in the phases of her years from age 18-19.Loved reading the book, a different story than the usual ones and the title and cover are also unique in their own way. Like the movie 'Lagaan', which I felt was intelligently made and has all the right notes in it, this story too has all the right ingredients to make it a superb plot- a love story weaved around a girl's search for something to be valued for. A beautiful sentence in it sums up, 'I gave up the need to be a good girl'. Now, I wish to see a movie made on this. Combat Skirts is a smart and sassy romance with dollops of army humour. Set in AWWA hostel Calcutta this rom-com is as clever as it's funny. Once you have processed your return in the portal, you're ready to post it off. Make sure you keep proof of postage. There are times the novel reminds you of adventures of hostel life like for instance the meeting of Charu and Aman at girl’s hostel at midnight hour or the drama and confrontation with police officer at the police station. That episode shows that contrary to what her roomies believe, Saba can rise up to the occasion if situation demands so.

I really liked the character of protagonist Saba because she really showed up as a great personality. The story share about her experiences which are really good to read. The college life, the fun and everything related to college days will make up smile and you will find yourself lost in your college days. The conversation over boys and the usual hostel fights over boys is just so funny and relatable. I can relate to so many things which are described here about the girls hostel life. There are so many other characters too in the story like Anika, Kabir, Adil and Faiz and they all really played their best roles to make the story more entertaining. The book is a super refreshing take on College life, although there is more mention of Hostel than the education itself. The dialogues and internal monologues of Saba are super entertaining. The characters are well in contrast with each other and even elders make an appearance every now and then which is conclusive for so many sub-plots of the story. There is zero vulgarity and prime focus has been put on helping Saba find a direction to her life and that is an exceptionally welcome move in a culture of authors whose talent lies wasted in writing sub-par fiction for teenage characters. First of all, congratulations to my dear friend Sahana Ahmed who has written this beautiful novel 'Combat Skirts' and has made her mark felt. For sure has she emerged an ace writer of my time. God bless her and best wishes to her for many more such successes, even greater ones than this one in future. The writing style was awesome. It made reading the book like watching a movie. It was well described and explained. I loved how perfectly the main character was developed. She had a certain charm to her. The love triangle trope was subtle yet enough. I'm glad it wasn't exaggerated much. The language was modest and fair.

Three: Saba currently has three suitors. The college hottie, the old crush, and the mysterious army lieutenant. All three confuse her to no end. Saba Minhas, our female protagonist, is eccentric but cute. The title is a clever dedication to her personality and passion. Her actions would often leave you wondering, but even then, they are hilarious and adorably so. Sahana Ahmed makes generous use of humor in her writing. And it is not just the subtle type, but also the laugh-out-loud type. The usage is clever and makes it to the list of one of the best things in the book. One example of this sagacious use of situational humor is through the way of well-timed puns. ‘Butt of course’, and ‘it was turning out to be a note-able day’ are a few specimens. On one occasion, the protagonist has this to say about herself, ‘If success was ninety-nine percent perspiration, I was a champion already.’ Even the ‘Vikram Betal’ fiasco at the dance club was a hilarious addition. One: All around her, there are multitudes of army aunties who know her and her family and are only happy to pass on the juiciest details about her life in the city.

We're classed as excellent on

The language of the book is rich, flowy, and lyrical. Keeping that in mind, I would recommend the book for intermediate and voracious readers. Beginners who are still uncomfortable with popular culture and rich language would find it a difficult read. I started reading this book one week ago and I found this book unputdowable because this book will make you laugh and will keep you entertained till the end. Saba is torn between her duty towards her parents and her newfound freedom. To complicate matters, she has more suitors than she can handle. Who will she choose? The old crush? The college hotshot? Or the mysterious Lieutenant?
