About this deal

All in all, this was my first book by this author but I don’t think it will be my last. Despite the minor shortcomings, this book kept me largely satisfied. Since I am not an avid contemporary thriller reader, I cannot tell you if the plot is similar to any of the other recent domestic thrillers in the market. But I know that I was quite happy with it. Definitely recommended if you are looking for an entertaining commercial thriller. The ending is excellent. While not completely unexpected (and also not completely realistic), it still offers the perfect finish to this plot.

This book tells us the story of Gavin Timothy and Delilah Blue. Gavin lives in a creepy house with its own unique character. I love to read horror themes where the house is actually a character in the story. The authors have convincingly written that portion. Millie's POV is straight up "dear diary" style. As in, "I spent 7 hours cleaning the house and I thought about Andy Winchester's bangin bod the entire time. He is so dreamy. Does he like me too????" It's also giving me "rages to riches" fanfic written by a tween vibes. BUT AT THE SAME DAMN TIME... the book was legit funny in parts???? Like great dark humour throughout???? Don't follow me home," he said as gently as he could. "Please, Delilah, don't ever follow me home again."There's also a romance in the book which I absolutely ADORED. Gavin and Delilah? They're so, so sweet and even though some might say it's insta-lovish, I actually don't think so. They're teenagers being in love and experiencing everything for the first time. And the fact that they already "knew" each other when they were younger just makes it work for me. I don't care if it's cheesy and maybe a little rushed, it's freaking adorable and I love both of them a lot! First, let me say that this was a great story – for about the first half of the novel. Then the author lost me. I understand what the author was attempting to do with weaving in the past (set in the mid-1600s) and the present (set in 1985), but I felt like she’d start down one road then veer off to follow another one before tying up the first plot thread, with the end result that none of them were satisfying. But I’m always playing Nancy Drew while I’m reading. Looking for bread crumbs, piecing clues together. So starting this book. Best thing for me. As always, not much to say about a thriller without spoiling anything (that would just be bad), but let's sum up the thoughts.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this novel for an honest review. It has been published in April 2022. The first was that Dahlilah comes off as a bit of a stalker towards Gavin. It's a pet peeve of mine when a female MC revolves all of her time pinning or obsessing over a guy. There are also a few convenient coincidences. (Then again, these are found in almost every thriller, which is why I don’t read much of this genre.) In Part One, Nina Winchester is looking for a maid to clean, help out with her daughter Cecilia, and perhaps prepare a meal on occasion. The person she hires will need to be desperate for a job, and have CERTAIN personality traits. I loved seeing the female in the alpha role! Delilah was such a treat. Always the one protecting Gavin and making sure he was okay. And guess what, Gavin is fine with it! I think he secretly loves it. The House was haunting, romantic, and suspenseful. Honestly, it would make a really fantastic movie! It's one of those stories that I found very easy to visualize complete as I read. The story just came to life in my mind. If they happened to be showing this story as a movie in theaters, I'd be lining up today!
