About this deal

Several skeletons are discovered in a tunnel during a canal restoration project near Midsomer Worthy. DCI Barnaby begins his investigations and discovers that one skeleton has modern dental work. Meanwhile, DS Troy has been promoted to Inspector. He begins his last case in Midsomer, investigating the murder of a teenager, Simon Mayfield (played by Henry Cavill), who had been shot with a gun that he and his friends had been using the previous night. The two detectives discover their cases are linked, and uncover a web of lies, affairs, and domestic arguments alongside a mysterious recluse with a hidden past. There is a full moon over Little Worthy at Halloween and the people in the area are thrilled when local photographer Steve Skelton wins a competition in the village with his own creation of the Wolf Hunter. Unexpectedly, the Wolf Hunter is becoming a viral meme, with people coming from miles around to explore the woods of Little Worthy in the hope of catching a glimpse of the beast. The excitement turns into fear when Jez Gladberry is found murdered in the woods, killed in the unique way of the Wolf Hunter. An old pagan festival is revived in Midsomer Parva, with the burning effigy of a straw woman as its centrepiece. To the horror of the onlookers, the local curate, Alex Deakin, is found trapped within the effigy and burns to death. As the police investigate, a series of further deaths from apparent spontaneous human combustion follow. Barnaby and Scott soon suspect that someone is using the illusion of witchcraft to hide their true motives. Laurence Fox denies 'brutal' divorce from Billie Piper turned him into a 'weaponised anti-woke bad boy' as he claims tweets branding him 'racist' were an 'organised pile-on' to destroy his career

Troy asks, "You know who did it?" Barnaby responds, "I think it was you." Troy told Leonard's mother about the death of Carla Constanza. This was enough for her to murder her son. She knew Leonard strangled the first three girls and had made him stop. She assumed Leonard killed Carla so he had to be killed. Annie Woodrow is being tried for the murder of her friend Frances Trevelyan. The prosecution alleges that her motive was her love for Frances' husband John. As Annie's trial begins, DCI Barnaby becomes increasingly doubtful of the damning evidence he provided to build the case against her. A chance remark by Frances's youngest daughter and a meeting with an old friend, a clinical psychologist, causes him to re-evaluate the case. With DC Jones awaiting news of his promotion to Detective Sergeant, they find themselves reinvestigating and uncover new evidence that puts the case in a very different light. Barnaby arrives home. "Joyce?" he calls. Cully says, "Hi, Dad. We've just carried her luggage upstairs. She's probably catching her breath." Barnaby says, "What did you say just now?" He runs off. DS Dan Scott arrives in Midsomer as DS Troy's replacement. He is instantly involved in a case in the village of Midsomer Mallow, when a college secretary is found murdered. Soon after a retired doctor is also murdered during the village's annual garden open day. Barnaby and Scott investigate the connection between the two victims, and the murder of a homeless drunk give them the clue they need. Meanwhile, Cully organizes a reunion with a group of old school friends, with unexpected results. The vicious royal assassination that shames even Harry and Meghan's odious cheerleader: MAUREEN CALLAHAN - who's read Omid Scobie's Endgame so you don't have to - is horrified at its unblushing cruelty Kate and David are at Bill's house. She tells Bill she only stayed with John because of David. But David's more troubled than ever. Kate asks if Bill is OK with David staying the weekend. Bill says it's fine and they are planning to go out on the boat. Barnaby and Winter are stranded on a remote island manor due to a storm after Victor Karras, owner of Karras Games, dies falling down the stairs and hit with a falling statue. Victor’s wife, Eleanor, is pregnant and plans to give the child to her sister Alicia. Later, Hugo Welles is also murdered and Barnaby and Winter discover the key to the case. The production values as always are top notch, with to die for scenery (with the house in the woods being like a foreboding character of its own), the idyllic look of it contrasting very well with the story's grimness, and quaint and atmospheric photography. The music fits perfectly, with some lush jauntiness and sometimes an ominous quality, and the theme tune one of the most memorable and instantly recognisable of the genre. As the preparations are underway for Cully Barnaby's wedding, Ned Fitzroy and Beth Porteous are married in Bledlow village. At the reception at Bledlow Hall, the maid of honour, Marina Fellowes, is found murdered. With the honeymoon postponed, the newlyweds and their guests find themselves under investigation by the police. Evidence soon points to a connection with archery when a fletching is found at the crime scene. Barnaby and Jones uncover a long family history with many secrets, lies, deception, and an illegitimate son. These things become even more complicated when the estate manager and former cook are also found murdered.

Barnaby and Winter have to step into the world of spirituality when the body of Tilly Mulroney is found surrounded by ritual symbols on the first night of the Angel’s Rise Psychic Fayre. Simeon Dagley falls under suspicion when it is revealed that one of his Devil Tarot cards was found beside Tilly’s body, but a while later, Simeon is also found murdered, hanging upside down from a tree in the woodland. It transpires that Simeon may have figured out the identity of Tilly’s murderer, by looking at his Tarot cards. DCI Barnaby soon learns the truth about the previous death of Bea Saint-Stephens, and he realises that her passing may be the key to the murder case. The body of Mahesh Sidana, butterfly collector and founding member of an elite IQ society, is found pinned to a wall in a manner akin to his treasured butterfly specimens. This is the first of a series of strange murders that evoke trapped insects. DCI Barnaby and DS Winter are thrust into a crime that impacts not only their community, but internationally. With the help of an old friend, they set out to catch the culprit before another victim is found. Barnaby and Troy go to the hospital to talk to Dorothea Pike. Barnaby says to Dorothea, "You killed your son. It was because you knew what he had done all those years ago. He killed three girls. Eva Hoffman. Joan Chaplin. Judith Albiston. And you found out about it." Dorothea says, "It was an abomination. Flesh of my flesh. I couldn't go to the police. I couldn't. But I warned him. It must never happen again. Never while I'm alive. Never." She turns her head and falls asleep. (or dies). Barnaby talks to Troy on the way out, "That's why the killer stopped after three girls. His mother found out. And she spent the next nine years watching him, protecting him. Remember when we told Leonard? About the killing?" ( Leonard said, "No. That's not possible. I mean... Have you taken the papers up yet? To mother?"). "He knew there couldn't have been a fourth murder, because he himself was the killer. He didn't want his mother to see the paper. Because he knew she'd jump to the wrong conclusion." Troy says, "She knew nothing about Carla Constanza. Until I went into her room and told her."

The launch of the latest sparkling wine, which is produced by the Carnarvon Estate Winery in Midsomer Vinae, loses all its fizz when wine critic Nadia Simons gives it a very harsh review. Moments later, guests who had been sampling the vintage start collapsing. Owner William Carnarvon suspects the Farmers' Wives' Association of trying to destroy his business. Kate Wilding tells Barnaby and Nelson that the glasses had been laced with slug poison. There are many suspects and motives and the detectives set out to piece the puzzle together.

When George Meakham visits Barnaby in his office he states "there's a full moon tonight." But, when we see Anna walking on the road, a 1/2 moon is clearly shown. Joyce joins the local watercolour society for an open-air art class on the village green in Midsomer Florey. Shortly before taking a break, she stumbles across the body of elderly Ruth Fairfax, a fellow artist. It turns out there was more to Ruth than met the eye. Barnaby is taken off the case by the National Intelligence Squad and it is left to Troy to 'apprehensively' keep Barnaby informed on the investigation. Barnaby and Troy soon uncover that the proceeds from an armed robbery are missing. They find out all information about former criminals alongside all the secret liaisons, before they bring all the culprits to justice. Notable also for a genuinely unexpected and frankly ingenious ending and for one of the show's best ever guest star performance in George Baker. John Nettles is a joy, and Jason Hughes is appealing enough in his debut episode. All the acting is great, with the top plaudits going to Baker. DAISY GOODWIN: Why I believe a good funeral can be just as memorable and life-affirming as a wedding (and to deny your family one is selfish), as more than half of us say a formal send-off is a waste of money The residents in the village of Elverton-Cum-Latterly are about to start their rehearsals for a charity drag queen extravaganza, when Lois Springfield is found murdered. And after receiving a warning message, Malik Payne is almost run over by a car and it now seems that someone is not very happy about the charity drag queen extravaganza. At the end of the show, Evelyn Hardy is found murdered and the terminally ill Rocco Templeton collapses at the village green. It soon transpires that someone wants to start a new life at a new place. A well kept secret has been held concealed, and someone’s life has been changed forever. Leonard brings morning medication up to his mother, Dorothea Pike, who is in a wheelchair. She asks who the men were she saw from her window. Leonard tells her that the policemen were there to warn him about false money in circulation. When Leonard asks how she is feeling, Dorothea says, "I'm in pain. If the Lord wanted me to feel better, he'd put me out of my misery. But he wants me to suffer. He's still punishing me." She gives her son a meaningful look. Dorothea says, "I haven't had my paper." Leonard tells her the paper didn't come.

I just listened to the podcast on this episode. Theories were solicited as to the plot hole/problem. I generally quite like this episode, and frankly, hadn't even noticed it before. Contractor had motive for kill couple to stop them from buying the house , so he could proceed with scam with realtor. He had already completed a building plan, so he was already in house and had access to piano wire. He then killed realtor who knew he killed the couple as she mentioned the police were coming for the both of them, she being an accomplice by means of the real estate sale scheme. Contractor then killed realtor to silence her.Just before the scene where Mrs Merrill is meeting with Mr Mitchell, the location is established with a brief shot of a clubhouse for a golf course. This is the same course where James Bond played a round with Goldfinger. Kate Merrill goes to talk to Bill Mitchell about John. She asks if John was involved with Carla Constanza in Rio. Kate tells Bill that John's watch was found in the wood. Bill says, "That's not possible." His car had clay on it from the wood. Kate calls Barnaby and says she knows who killed Carla.
