About this deal

Brooks is a pro at building suspense even if it plays out in some rather spectacularly yucky episodes, one involving a short spear that takes its name from “the sucking sound of pulling it out of the dead man’s heart and lungs. The only way the remaining witness can survive is to find out who murdered Rosie all those years ago. Student Alex Gilbery and his three best friends are staggering home from a party when they stumble upon the body of a young woman. She has won many awards internationally, including the CWA Gold Dagger for best crime novel of the year and the LA Times Book of the Year Award.

The Distant Echo (Karen Pirie, book 1) by Val McDermid The Distant Echo (Karen Pirie, book 1) by Val McDermid

The book’s second half remains sharp and concise but lacks the threatening atmosphere generated at the start. Adapted by Emer Kenny (Harlots, Save Me Too) who will also take the role of Karen’s friend River Wilde, Karen Pirie also stars Chris Jenks (Sex Education) as Jason ‘Mint’ Murray and Zach Wyatt (Blithe Spirit) as DS Phil Parhatka.

McDermid was signing books, and a woman asked her to autograph a Top of the Pops annual which contained a picture of the disgraced late TV presenter Jimmy Savile. More visceral is the mistrust she establishes between the four friends, the police and the murdered girl’s family. The Guardian– Humour, confidence and charm are perfectly blended in this suspenseful adaptation of Val McDermid’s bestseller.

Detailed Review Summary of The Distant Echo by Val McDermid

This intriguing second novel by the author of Report for Murder again casts lesbian Scottish journalist Lindsay Gordon. The Distant Echo by Val McDermid is an evocative tale of St Andrews in the late 1970s, where four university students find a dead girl. Adapted by Emer Kenny (Harlots, Save Me Too) Karen Pirie is based on the novel, The Distant Echo, the first in a series of best-selling novels about the young Scottish female detective set in the beautiful Scottish university town of St. Twenty-five years later the police mount a 'cold case' review of Rosie's unsolved murder and the four are still suspects. McDermid (A Clean Break) enters new ground with a dark tale that is more complex, more carefully crafted and far more disturbing than her Kate Brannigan mysteries.Even in the eerie dimness of snow light, he could see that the bulwark against his fall was no botanical feature. In February 2022, McDermid said she would be withdrawing her support and sponsorship from Raith Rovers after the club signed striker David Goodwillie, who had been ruled to have raped a woman and made to pay damages in a civil case in 2017.
