Marusou" had a premonition that dreadful things would happen to her, and she would rather die than face them. "Taburou" met his doppelganger and, believing it to be an omen of death, has chosen to take his own life rather than wait for death to catch up to him. "Piitan" works in a robotics lab and was chosen to be the model for a superior humanoid robot. Since he can't compete with its perfection, he feels there is no longer any point in his existence. "Baracchi" believes that her own reflection has given her a death sentence and that the severe disfigurement affecting the left side of her face is a life of its own growing out of her. She, Piitan and Taburou all believe that another version of themselves has condemned them to die. I absolutely loved this! What a fun, unique story with some really gross elements. I think this is one of my favorite Junji Ito pieces (though I feel like I've said that about the last few of his books I reviewed!). The characters are three-dimensional, the twists are exciting, and the whole plot is that perfect blend of bizarre and delightful that Junji Ito is so well-known for. I highly recommend this for any horror manga lovers!

Meaningful Name: The mysterious soul jewels from the afterlife are designated "paradonite". Most people take the name to mean they are from "paradise" given their origin in a glowing spirit realm and energy power, but they actually represent a "paradox"—these stones which can save humanity with their energy simultaneously destroy it by being the souls of the people who populate the world. Ben K: And if you had to go underground, there must have been insects, like centipedes and the like? Three-time Eisner Award winner Junji Ito’s legendary sci-fi thriller is finally available in English! We had the fortunate opportunity to interview Junji Ito and his editor-in-charge, Makiko Hara, at the offices of Asahi Shimbun Publications which published the art book. Me ha parecido asqueroso en diversas escenas, claro, es un manga de terror, pero una cosas es tener miedo y otra muy diferente asco. Es que haber visto a una cabra dar a luz es más agradable joder. Nobushi: Did you have a say in the process? I mean, in deciding which voice actor should handle which character?

Definitely another great, but odd story written by Junji Ito. The reasoning behind my rating is that I expected it to have a different turn, that didn't sprout into pure – but fascinating – science fiction. I found the whole concept a little concerning, to be quite honest. Ito: Shinobu Tagashira was the director. She really likes my work and respects it. In the way she expressed the mood of the manga, told the stories, and showed the images, I got the impression that she took great care in handling my work. I think some episodes turned out even better than the original.Creo que no puedo decir mucho más, porque es una historia para descubrir poco a poco y madurar, pero sin duda me parece una obra más que recomendable.

Punk in the Trunk: Tabaru and Baracchi goes on the run after realizing they're fugitives, bringing robo Pii-tan along with them. To avoid suspicion, the latter rides in the trunk of Tabaru's car, and somehow remains in there for over a month. Mad Oracle: After Dr. Suga chains poor Maruso to her bed, her psychic intuition goes into overdrive, and takes her sanity with it, until the tumor is removed from her brain.. Facial Horror: Baracchi pulls aside her hair to reveal a cluster of jewels crowding out of her birthmark. Ben K: "Gyo" is quite a remarkable work with many fans. The fusion of organic and inorganic, and an uncanny sense of agency as well... A suicide pact amongst four people twists and warps into a bizarre and heavy-handed parable about humanity's greed and its self-destructive pursuit of energy sources. It's all a little dumb and a little dull though, with wooden and shallow characters whose terrible fates could barely stir a shrug in me.Ito: I lived in the countryside, but I occasionally went into town. I would see ad balloons floating above the buildings, and they were symbols of life in the big city which I aspired to. Also, I liked flying saucers as a kid, UFOs. Strange, unidentified, mysterious objects in the sky. So, I combined elements which I liked and incorporated them into my work. Ito: (laughs) I really don't know much about games. My nephew plays and sometimes I play with him but I'm just not good at it. But I am interested in VR. Holding a control pad with your hands doesn't feel intuitive to me, so I'm not good at it, but if you could play by experiencing something the way you know it from reality, for example flying in a plane... That would be fun to try in VR. Living Shadow: Taburo is haunted by his own shadow. When he turns especially paranoid, he hides in complete darkness so his shadow can not exist. As such, the shadow starts to glow and becomes his door into the other world. Ito: Yes. The manga I was reading wasn't that scary. On the other hand, TV shows where they went into haunted houses or had a medium who could summon spirits, I thought those were scary. Interesting, but scary. I couldn't go to the bathroom by myself. Especially since the bathroom in my house was at the end of an underground tunnel. When they showed photos with ghostly apparitions on those shows, that was scary. I was scared by things that seemed real to me. As for manga, of course, some of it was scary but for the most part, I found it interesting and intriguing. I loved Kazuo Umezu's drawings. Strange creatures, the grotesque. They fascinated me, so I enjoyed reading his manga. But that bathroom was scary...
