About this deal

In September 1983, the future seemed bright for Tami Oldham Ashcraft. She and her fiancé, Richard Sharp, had been sailing for the past six months. I´d wanted to read this book for ages for a mixture of reasons. I like a decent survival story but mainly I am fascinated by the open ocean - the vast, scary scale of it. The idea of falling off a boat and being lost in the middle of that endless blue desert, with all that´s in it and above it, is a thought which fascinates, terrifies and amuses me. So I wanted to read this book to find out what Steven Callahan made of it - after all, he did it. Every day at midday, she look through the sextant’s telescope and adjusted it to measure the sun’s angle above the horizon. She worked out her ship’s latitude using nautical maps - she became her own captain. She had a plan.

From bestselling author, CNN+ host of No Mercy, No Malice, and NYU business school professor Scott Galloway comes an urgent examination of the future of our nation – and how we got here. year-old Tami, played by Shailene Woodley in the film, was left alone after one of the worst hurricanes in history hit three weeks into their trip and took her fiancé from her. There is nothing I can write further that wouldn't be a spoiler. Not a word. It's a fantastic book if you are a sailor or like real-life adventure stories or even just want a good read that isn't like any other book. Definitely the hardest part was dealing with Richard being gone,” she said years later to the Chicago Tribune. “There were times I didn't even want to live anymore because I didn't know how I was going to go on. I was never going to fall in love again.” Adrift is about one man's solitary journey, both internal and external, on the perilous ledge between life and death. Steven Callahan is attempting to cross the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to Antigua, but before he departs, an elderly fisherman points to his vessel, the 21' long Napoleon Solo, and says, "In such a small boat? Tonto!" (Fool) The rest of the journey is fraught with danger, starting from when the Napoleon Solo capsizes and sinks, forcing Callahan to abandon ship in a rubber lifeboat.Of course, there is no way of ever knowing, but you have to wonder about the fate of Richard. How did he lose his tether? Did he drown immediately or did he bob around for a few hours dog-paddling in those terrible seas? I never feel sorry for people who die doing things they love. Sailing across the Pacific in a sailboat, even one as big and majestic as Hazaña, is inherently very dangerous. It’s the same for mountain climbers. People die doing that all the time and you can’t be expected to feel sorry for them. If they wanted to live longer, they would have avoided such dangerous hobbies. I’d rather go out like Richard, or fall off a 1,000 feet shear mountain face than die in a car accident—the most meaningless way to die imaginable. Ashcraft believes the wind and waves were too powerful for her fiancé, yanking him from the tether and sweeping him overboard. What a life! Tami Oldham and fiancé Richard Sharp lived their dream....both free spirits....both young and adventurous....doing what they loved best....spending time together and sailing the pacific....until disaster hits with a vengeance.

Overall this book is a selfish indulgence on my part; a dysfunctional relationship that ended suddenly and afterwards it's just so obvious how you were used, and you hate how you let yourself get exploited like that, but you think about the sex all the time and you miss it sometimes.... From bestselling author and NYU business school professor Scott Galloway comes an urgent examination of the future of our nation - and how we got here. As I look out of the raft, I see God's face in the smooth waves, His grace in the dorado's swim, feel His breath against my cheek as it sweeps down from the sky. I see that all creation is made in His image." I think this book would be enjoyed more by someone who works with their hands and can appreciate Callahan's connection with his boat and skill in patching up equipment failures. I expected some technical details, but these were more numerous than I liked. Amazingly, Ashcraft still loves to sail and “is a 100-ton licensed captain with more than 50,000 offshore miles” under her belt.If you did not guess from the title, Adrift is the true story of a man who, after his boat sinks, spends seventy-six days adrift in a tiny life raft. One might think that a guy sitting in a raft for seventy-six days might get monotonous, but this book is captivating and inspiring. I won't give away the details, but the all of the things that Callahan went through to survive were incredible. Callahan, Steven. "The Life Raft: Don't Leave Your Ship Without It". Some of the technical aspects of sailing weren't written very clearly, at least not in my opinion, and I know my way around a sailboat. First of all this is about survival on the sea but it is indeed more an emotional story cause this lady had enough supplies to last her for a long time.Heartbreaking true story behind Adrift the movie - the real-life tale is far more harrowing than the film
