About this deal

One reason collectors may get so furious about messed up grades or insufficient expertise is because they entrust graders with their most valuable memories.

By ‘locking in’ or preserving a card’s condition you’re giving it the potential to be a sought after piece that many collectors will want to get their hands on. According to Vice, companies have hired hundreds of new staff to deal with “an avalanche of cardboard” – half a million cards a week – but they’ve still had to stop taking submissions. And though a collector knows that a grader will be looking at things like edges, corners, centring, colouring, whitening on the cards’ blue backs, silvering – where the glittering foil layer extends slightly past the paper layer – and general damage like scratches and stains, there are no videos of these companies carrying out this examination.

So if PSA had completed up until January X, 2021, I'd be able to make rough assumptions as to how far I am from being graded. It contains complete all the cards from Base Set, Jungle, Fossil and three Black Star Promo cards on the end to fill the last few spaces! Another criticises PokéGrade’s scoring system: “don’t just pluck numbers from thin air because I can get my 84 year old nan to do that at bingo when it re-opens! A Pokémon card’s condition is determined by its grading – this is the process by which a card is certified as real, rated on a scale of one to ten, and sealed in a transparent box known as a slab, protected for all eternity against sticky fingers and the elements. While I'll never know why the PSA card graded like it did, at least CGC gives me a little more insight with the subgrades.

The most obvious thing you'll notice is that the CGC slabs are clear while the PSA slabs are frosted. One theory for the hostility is that the rise of a UK grader will lower the value of cards graded by PSA, Beckett and CGC by alleviating current scarcity, or flooding the market with highly-graded cards. I'm going to do my best here to describe things, but you might not believe me unless you experience the PSA and CGC slabs for yourself.

If you’re looking for something a bit more high-end to showcase your collection, then a glass display cabinet is a real statement piece. At the more extreme end, over the years there have been accusations of the companies missing trimmed or altered cards, or, more seriously, about the major companies deliberately undergrading popular cards. It’s a very small step in the right direction, but reinstating their more cost-effective tiers still feels a long way off.The breakthroughs and innovations that we uncover lead to new ways of thinking, new connections, and new industries. What seems certain is that not all of these new companies will succeed, and that’s important to people who want a perishable thing to last forever. The other was personal: both collectors were sitting on millions of pounds worth of cards, yet their value was diminishing. Graham, who is 30 and speaks with the controlled affability of a salesman, remembered how he used to zip through the playground, clutching an elastic band full of cards.

Certainly for older and rarer Pokemon cards, Pokemon card values have increased exponentially in recent times. You’re looking to sell the card straight after grading– again they won’t be as valuable compared to the established grading companies, but if the grade comes back a 9 or a 10, you could still potentially cash in for a profit. There are three established Pokemon card grading services that are widely accepted among collectors.
