About this deal

It’s March 2021 and Tim Ruddle lies awake, he’s a worried man as the farm is not paying and they’ve tried diversifying. The story is relevant to what has been happening with dogs/puppies in the country today and the consequences behind it. I have always enjoyed following the Roy/Cleo/ children and their progress, Cleo is a great character and perfect for Roy.

Stop Them Dead' tackles a subject that I've never seen in fiction before, I suppose because its so new - this time Grace and his team are involved in the world of illegal puppy farms, and illegal dog importing, where you dont know the history of the puppy but may be told that it is a pedigree. Tim Ruddle is woken by the noise of vehicles in his yard and when he goes down to investigate he is crushed to death by two vehicles as the thieves make good their escape. We are treated to some great pieces of detective work by Grace and his team, and it was fun to have all the usual team together for this case – my favourite still must be Norman Potting who was there with his usual drole wit!We have a couple of storylines running parallel to each other, with the investigation into the murder of a farmer who was trying to prevent his puppies being stolen, the subsequent trail into who was illegally importing puppies from abroad and the sad hospitalisation of a young girl. The character descriptions all seem shallow, the dialogue doesn't ring true, and there seem to be a lot of characters whose only role is to explain things to us. Stop them Dead is the 19th Roy Grace novel and was as excellent a read as I have come to expect from this great series.

I personally find it heart breaking reading about things like this, but I applaud Peter for highlighting this horrible and highly cruel business. A book by PeterJames is always a ‘go to’ for me and this will be one of my favourites in the Roy Grace series. Two vehicles and several men are here to steal valuable puppies and what ensues is a nightmare scenario.A new Peter James will always jump straight to the top of my reading list, I love the Grace series and have enjoyed them all; I am always engrossed by the imaginative storylines and the criminal acts that he can dream up.
