About this deal

The farm trail, which is just under 2 miles, starts just outside of our late 17th-century Westmorland stone barn that houses the farm shop and café. The loop around the farm fields and woodlands is perfect for little legs (carriers are better than pushchairs for the tiny ones). An extraordinary photographic exhibition documenting the stories of 40 Cumbrian farmers will open in the Lake District next month. The award-winning Forty Farms photography exhibition can be seen as never before from later this month. Over the course of a year, Amy conducted frank conversations about the financial challenges of farming; about the tightrope balance of producing quality food in a nature-rich landscape; and about the highs and lows of working in an area that is known and loved internationally.

They provide so much, including food for our tables, accommodation for our visitors and, importantly, they provide care for the Cumbrian environment we all love. In March 2021, British Life Photographer of the Year Amy Bateman embarked on a journey to record the stories of Forty Farms in Cumbria. Forty Farms was Published in Sept 2022. It won Lakeland Book of the Year the book has also become a successful Photographic touring exhibition. In March 2020 Amy, a farmer and photographer, embarked on a journey to record the stories of 40 farms in Cumbria to produce a coffee table book.In March 2020, British Life Photographer of the Year, and Cumbrian farmer, Amy Bateman, embarked on a journey to record the stories of Forty Farms in the Lake District and Cumbria to produce a sumptuous coffee table book. This March experience a photographic exhibition documenting the stories of 40 Cumbrian farmers at Windermere Jetty Museum in the Lake District. Cheese, gelato and weddings – Making a Family Dairy Farm Sustainable. Jen Lee shares her 10-year journey including creating Cumbria’s first organic and 100 per cent pasture fed dairy herd to producing Torpenhow Cheese and Three Hills Gelato. Our family farm, some of our wonderful producers, and our farming friends, feature in a brand new exhibition offering a unique insight into the everyday lives, fears and hopes of 40 extraordinary farmers throughout Cumbria.

The Forty Farms Photographic Exhibition at Low Sizergh Barn is openuntil April 2024. Every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day: 9 am – 5.30 pm. It’s so important to me to tell the stories of the people and landscape of Cumbria and what a spectacular location to continue the exhibition’s journey, right on the shores of Windermere.”British Life Photographer of the Year, and Cumbrian farmer, Amy Bateman’s acclaimed exhibition Forty Farms will be at Windermere Jetty Museum, which is run by Lakeland Arts, from March 4 to June 4. I hope this exhibition will take you beyond the farm gate into the lives of farmers and change perceptions of how the countryside is managed. The rural urban divide feels wider than ever, and my hope is that this exhibition can play a part in narrowing the gulf between food producers, farmers and consumers.” Photographer Amy Bateman captured agricultural life across Cumbria in her project, which has been exhibited and turned into a book. Visitors also have the opportunity to visit Rheged’s latest exhibition in the Community Gallery Our Common Heritage. The exhibition curated by The Westmorland Dales Landscape Partnership Scheme runs until Christmas. It charts the history of the Westmorland Commons and how their role has changed in recent times, incorporating first hand interviews with commoners and farming representatives. Some of the 40 farmers featured are our customers and it is a privilege to be able to highlight their work through this farm-based outdoor exhibition of Amy’s wonderful images.”

It’s been a dream to keep telling these farming stories to more people and this way we can reach a brand-new audience. I’m hoping to tour with this outdoor exhibition, now we have H&H as a partner that looks more likely.”I am delighted to have gone into partnership with H&H group to develop the exhibition as an outdoor exhibition onto weatherproof panels and will be touring the country, starting at Low Sizergh Barn in November 2023. We’re delighted to be hosting Forty Farms which brings to life the stories of local farmers who for generations have been fundamental in shaping the landscape and culture of this region.” In March 2021, British Life Photographer of the Year, Amy Bateman, embarked on a year-long journey to record the stories of 40 farms across Cumbria. One of the farms she photographed was our farm, Yew Tree Farm, Coniston. Now people will have the chance to see her images in a unique setting – as they are being installed outdoors, along a two-mile farm and woodland walk at Low Sizergh Barn, on the outskirts of Kendal. Amy said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be working with Lakeland Arts to bring Forty Farms to Windermere Jetty Musuem for its first stop on its national tour.
