About this deal

The bottom of the card has more specific options, and these are usually Events. Each event marks a change in the game and usually that card is then removed from the game, instead of going onto your discard pile. These events can see informants being added to the board, tokens being drawn blind from the bag and placed on the board, or even preventing the other player from playing their own events in that round. The payoff for losing a card permanently can be huge, but has to be balanced with losing whatever power that card had for moving tokens instead, so it’s a really nice balancing act. Determine who will play the Editor and ' who will play the Nixon Administration (from now on referred to as "Nixon"). So I was looking to buy the watergate game because it seems fun and has a relatively short run time. The whole thing is based on real-life events so there is a small learning component to it which is pretty cool. If you've played this game before, would you recommend it? Does it get boring/predictable after a while? Every choice in Watergate matters. Each card you play carries weight and meaning. Importantly though those choices are limited and don’t feel overwhelming. This means you can spend time concentrating on how agonising they feel instead. Isn’t that fun?

game about the most notorious of all A card-driven 2-player game about the most notorious of all

Ok, full disclosure, I’m a massive fan of card driven historically themed games. Twilight Struggle is my favourite game of all time. I’m also a massive fan of this era of US history and this isn’t the first game that has given me the somewhat perverse pleasure of playing as the quintessential American bogeyman, Richard Nixon (Thanks 1960!). So, I guess my expectations for this little box of political intrigue were high. But boy did Matthias Cramer meet them! Not sure what game to buy next? Buy a premium mystery box for two to four great games to add to your collection! Buy Premium Box » The need to keep one eye on the momentum disk and the other on evidence and which informants are in play is key to success, but at the same time, you can’t simply ignore initiative either, since whoever holds it has an extra card (and thus a whole extra turn) for as long as they hold it. Whilst spending enough effort to move evidence or one of the tokens off the board in your direction means securing that item is certain, it isn’t always the most efficient way to play. Instead, it can often be better to have an item just on your side of the board so that when the round ends (when all cards are used) you obtain it anyway – albeit in the most efficient possible way. Most cards in the game feature an event. Events must be removed from the game (e.g. to the box) after you use their action part. Only the event "Gambit" provides an alternative. The game ends immediately with a win for the Editor if: At least 2 informants (face-up picture tiles) on the evidence board are connected via face- up evidence tokens to Nixon's picture in the center. I’m not a huge politics buff, but I have to say game designer Matthias Cramer did a fantastic job with Watergate. He took one of the most notorious political scandals and built a game around it that not only embraces its theme wholeheartedly but is an absolute blast to play. Cards can be used for their value to move markers and tokens.

Watergate’ Board Game Review - Nerdly ‘Watergate’ Board Game Review - Nerdly

My recorded win rate in marvel champions is about 65%, which feels about right. More than anything I want wins to feel hard fought and losses to have felt winnable up until we got crushed, whatever...Staff, Ars (2021-12-03). "Ars Technica's ultimate board game gift guide, 2021 edition". Ars Technica . Retrieved 2022-03-23. If you want gameplay similar in strategy to Twilight Struggle, but would like it in a game that does not take hours to playthrough, then Watergate is a perfect alternative. If there is no face- down evidence token with that color (and Nixon tells you so), you may instead move either the initiative token, the momentum token, or an already face-up evidence token with that color (or - in the case of a joker - any color). Place the game board A between you so that the Editor can see the board the right way up, while Nixon looks at it upside down.

Important: When following a card's instructions, you have to fully carry out all instructions that are possible. Instructions that cannot be carried out (because, for example, a token that you are supposed to move is not present) can be ignored. Some of the most common instructions Watergate is an asymmetric game. Nixon has to gain five momentum tokens to win, while the editor has to link any two informants to Nixon on the board, by placing connected evidence tokens on it. On your turn you play a card from your hand, and each card has two parts. The top part of the card lets you move any evidence token of a matching colour towards you by the number of steps written on the card, or you can choose to move either the round’s momentum token, or the initiative token towards you instead. The top half of cards are used for moving tokens, the bottom halves do something more, but may be lost if you do The game ends immediately with a win for Nixon if: Nixon has managed to place a total of 5 momentum tokens on their momentum card.

Watergate was designed by Matthias Cramer, who previously designed the worker placement title Glen More. [1] The game was published in 2019 in German and English by Frosted Games and Capstone Games. [2] Reception [ edit ] At any time, both of you may look at face-down evidence tokens that are already on the evidence board. To win, the Nixon Administration must build up enough momentum to make it to the end of the term, whereas the Editor must gather enough evidence to connect two informants directly to the President. An informant is considered connected to Nixon if a thread coming from that informant's face-up picture tile runs all the way through face- up evidence tokens to Nixon's picture in the center (empty spaces and face-down evidence tokens disrupt connections). The rule book deserves a special mention. Not only does it have really clear instructions and setup diagrams, with examples of every rule, but it has bios of everyone involved in the game, and a well-researched history of events. A far more in-depth telling of the Watergate story than I managed
